GOP Leading Demos In Race for Funds

are back in their accustomed
place, comfortably ahead of
the Democrats in the race for
campaign funds.
Three months ago Congres
sional Quarterly reported the
startling fact that in the first
five months of 1959 Demo
cratic campaign committees
received more contributions
than their Republican coun
terparts. It was the first time
since 1949 that had been true.
Now the situation is back
to normal. The GOP wiped
Dut the Democrats' lead with
a single stroke a June din
ner in Washington that
brought in $372,0u0 at $100
a plate.
The Republicans, who
trailed by $183,000 in contri
butions through May, led the
Democrats by $492,000 at the
end of August, according to a
tabulation of official reports.
The Republicans had taken
in $1,494,449 and the. Demo
crats, $1,002,368. The GOP
advantage is probably even
wider now, thanks to the
fast start the party has made
on a drive to collect 1,000
gifts of $1,000 each before
Christmas.
Oplimism Revived
Republican spokesmen link
the improvement of party
fortunes directly to the re
vival of optimism over its
chances in the 1960 election.
After the Democratic sweep
in the 1958 elections, GOP
fund-raisers found the dol
lars hard to come by.
President Eisenhower's
spirited drive to curb "spend
ing" by the Democratic-controlled
Congress - a drive in
which 'Republican Congress
men joined enthusiastically
convinced many of these re
luctant contributors that the
GOP was not dead, the Re
publican spokesmen say.
The June dinner-a tribute
to Republicans in Congress
was a . greater financial suc
cess than the promoters had
dared to hope.
' Meantime, the Democrats
have raised record amounts
of cash -for them but still
find they must scrape to pay
their bills.
The party took in more in
the first eight months of 1959
than it did in all of 1957 - the
last previous noi - election
year. But almost ' a third of
the million dollar receipts
were earmarked specifically
for reduction of the carryover
debt from the 1956 campaign.
More than $460,000 still re
mains to be paid on that debt,
and current expenses barely
are being meu At the end of
October the Democratic Na
tional" committee was two
months behind on the rent for
its headquarters.
National Chairman Paul M.
Butler Nov. 7 blamed the
"tight money" situation on
the failure of the states to
meet their assigned quotas
for support of the national
committee.
Butler said only three
states - Maryland, South Da
kota and Nebraska - and the
District of Columbia had paid
their 1957-59 quotas in full.
In iart, the financial plight
of the Democrats seems to
stem from the controversy
over Butler himself, whose
statements on civil rights and
other subjects have aggra
vated many party regulars.
Most of the Southern states
are far in arrears on their
quotas and many Southern
leaders apparently agree with
Georgia Democratic Chair
man John Sammons Bell that
"it would be the height of
foolishness for us to furnish
financial aid for Butler."
In an effort to pry more
money from the state organi
zations, Butler Nov. 7 an
nounced that delegations to
the 1960 convention in Los
Angeles would be seated and
housed according to the de
gree of financial support they

the planet Venus has water
vapor in its atmosphere. If
it does, then the possibility
arises that the planet has
vegetable and perhaps some
sort of "animal" life.
Moore said the flight was
"very successful" except for
the rough landing. "Our car
bon dioxide rose about 30,
000 feet, but other than that
everything went well," he
said.

Bodies Recovered
From Columbia
Kalama-UPD-A twin-engine
Piper' Apache plane, which
had crashed in the Columbia
river a mile ' and one half
south of here Saturday night,
was recovered from about
35 feet of water Sunday.
The body of the pilot, Alex
ander Bruce McEachern, 52,
was found in the back seat
of the craft Deputy Sheriff
John Esprzo, said the impact
of the crash apparently forced
McEachern's body , back in
the passenger cabin of the
craft.
The body of Richard Jones,
a passenger in the plane, was
recovered soon-after the
crash.
Corbelf Looks To
Senate Presidency
Portland- (UPI) -Senate Sen.
Alfred Corbett (D-Portland)
says he believes he has'
enough support to be elected
president of the state Senate
in 1961 if the Democrats re
tain control of the upper
chamber.
The 1959 Senate had 19
Democrats and 11 Republi
cans. Seven of the Democrats
are holdovers for 1961.
