Probe Would Give
Ike Prestige on
Europe-Asia Trip
Cape Canaveral, Fla. -(UPD-Scientists
are preparing this
nation's final 1959 space rock
et for a mid-December shot de
scribed as one of the biggest
yet undertaken by the United
States.
If all goes as planned, the
shot into deep space will give
President Eisenhower's Euro
pean and Asian tour which
starts Thursday - the same
kind of prestige that Soviet
Premier Nikita Khrushchev
got from the Russian moon
shot before his trip to the
United States.
Not As Powerful
America's last big chance
for 1959 rests with a Thor
Able IV rocket,' only one-fifth
as powerful as the big Russian
space rockets.
The Thor-Able will carry a
small payload which scientists
hope will escape earth's grav
ity and cross into the orbit of
the planet Venus. The . man
made planetoid will carry a
radio "voice" to send back in
formation from as far away as
50 million miles. This is more
than 100 times farther than
America's one sun satellite,
Pioneer IV launched last
March 3, was able to transmit.
Russia also has one satellite in
orbit around the sun, Lunik I
launched Jan. 2, 1959.
To Relay Information
The probe will study com
munications at interplanetary
ranges in preparation for later
shots to Venus and Mars. It al
so will relay information
about conditions in space such
as solar radiation.
Beyond the deep-space
probe, America's space, re
search future is a bit clouded.
Critics of this country's cur
rent progress in the space race
are putting pressure on the
administration for a speedup,
and at least one administra
tion official hinted last week
end that the , government is
considering another attempt
to orbit the moon soon.
Kennedy Sees
Importance of
1960 Election
Cheyenne,' Wyo. -(UPI)- Sen.
John Kennedy (D-Mass.) said
Sunday that the 1960 presi
dential election might become
more important to the nation
than the 1932 victory of
Franklin D. Roosevelt. "
"In 1932, the security of
the country depended on the
election of a Democratic presi
dent," he said. "In I960, the
election of a Democratic pres
ident involves the cause of
freedom around the world."

White House next year.
"In the next 10 years, un
less we bring some sense into
our farm policies, the Soviet
Union may outproduce us in
food and find some better
way of distributing it to a
hungry world," Kennedy said.
"By 1975 the Soviet Union
may outproduce us in hydro
electric power.
Works To Discredit
"Every time the Soviets are
first, whether thev are firot in
education, hydro-electric pow
er, space, or food, it augments
the totalitarian svstem anri
works to our discredit."
At a news conference Sun
day, Kennedy said he thought
the 80-day back to work pro

Kennedv said he thought

LEAVE SHELTER Mr. and Mrs. Brent Parker are shown
entering the California sunshine after spending their two
weeks honeymoon underground in a nuclear fallout shelter
which they say leaks dust. Brent, 19, and his wife, Renae,
17, were given a $1,000 check for their testing of the shelter.
Their only links with the outside world were a telephone,
a battery-powered radio and a battery-operated television
set. - (UPI Telephoto)
Couple Completes
2 Weeks in Atomic
Fallout Shelter
Downey, Calif. -flJPD- A 19-year-old
youth and the teen
age bride he married Nov. 14
start today their first full
week of married life above
ground.
They spent the first two
weeks of marriage in an 8 by
8 foot underground atomic
fall-out shelter.
Brent and Renae Parker
emerged from the shelter Sat
urday, blinking in the bright
sunlight and a little paler, but
apparently none the worse
for their experience.
Cooking Difficult '
"It wasn't too bad," smiled
Renae.. "The only difficult
thing wa cooking." She had
to prepare their meals on a
hot plate, and she admitted,
they had overeaten the stored
groceries so that their last two
days in the shelter they were
without ' meat.
They had to eat fruits and
vegetables the last 48 hours,
they said.
Congressman Chet Holifield
(D - Calif.), chairman of a
House subcommittee of radia
tion, was on hand to meet the
couple and inspect the small
family shelter with reporters
and civil defense officials.
Renae caused some concern
among civil defensemen when
she reported by telephone sev
eral days after entering the
shelter that dust was sifting
into the concrete bunker. Dust
after an atomic attack prob
ably wquld carry deadly radi
ation and imperil inhabitants
of shelters if it seeped in.
Doubts Dust Harmful
Holifield said he found some
dust on an air intake ventila
tion pipe, but he said he
doubted the amount would be
harmful to occupants even if it

had been contaminated.
They were locked in the
shelter for the full length of
time, and when they emerged
they received a $1,000 check
for their ordeal from a finance
company which built the shel
ter to see whether a couple
could actually live in it.

Vdcdous Crimes on
Washington (DPE - FBI Di-1
rector J. Edgar Hoover report

such as murder, rape, stab

on the increase throughout
the nation.
Hoover declared that these
terroristic crimes have risen

Decrease 'Insignificant'
Only a decrease in "crimes

crimes against person s,"
Hoover said. He termed the

decrease "almost insignifi

Of non-violet crimes, Hoov

nine months of the year show

robberies, 2 per cent in burg
