seized by the government will
be buried, but a final decision
on what to do with them
hasn't been made yet.
By Wednesday night, the
government naa impounaea
230,000 pounds of cranberries
as contaminated by the weed
killer aminotriazole, which
has caused cancer in rats.
Owners of cranberry lots
have 30 days to protest gov
ernment seizure action. After
that, the berries can be dis
posed of under supervision of
a U. S. marshal. FDA officials
weren't anticipating any pro
tests.

To Bring Recreational Benefit

bring substantial agricultural
and recreational, benefits to
the Ashland area, Ashland
Chamber of Commerce mem
bers were told here last week
Speaking at the chamber
meeting were Jack Nichols,
bureau of reclamation admin
istrator for the TID project,
and Walter Hoffbuhr, district
manager. '
Nichols said completion of
the project in 1961 would
"represent the realization of
a , plan which had its incep
tion more than half a century
ago."

Shortly after the turn of
the century, he continued, for
ward looking valley residents
realized that additional water
sources would have to be de
veloped east of the Cascade
summit. ;
By . 1950, "said Nichols, a
comprehensive Rogue basin
development . program had
been outlined but only the
Talent division received full
approval and support of re
clamation and conservation in
terests, mis project is tne
only . portion of the major
plan which has gone into con
struction.
The BLM official said the
project includes a system of
collecting canals, east of the
summit which diverts water
to the new Howard Prairie
reservoir. The reservoir, now
completed and being used for
storage, has a capacity of
62,000 acre feet. ;
Regulating Reservoir
A 20-mile long canal from
Howard Prairie carries wa
ter to the regulating reservoir
on Keene creek. From there
it is taken to the west side of
the range by tunnel and
dropped down to the Green
springs powef plant, and then
down to Emigrant reservoir.
Emigrant, which will start
filling with water in the win
ter of 1960-61, is now being
enlarged from its original ca
pacity of 8,000 acre feet to
40,000 acre feet and a new
dam is under construction.
The economy of the Ash
land area, Nichols said, will
benefit not only from the ad
ditional water supply for ag
riculture, , but also through
the recreational facilities
which will be available at
Howard Prairie and Emigrant
lake.
In other TID action Tues
day, Hoffbuhr warned that
land owners who want their
acreage under the new source
of water supply must have
their petitions for inclusion
in the TID office before Dec.
31.
Although about 1,500 acres
of the 5,000 acres which can
be served have been signed
up, Hoffbuhr explained, peti
tions are out for about 2,000

114 persons sentenced to pris
on for 30 years for "acts
against the peace of the Do
minican Republic. Ninety

Fines totalling $100 mil
lion were imposed on the de
fendants. " Castro, Betancourt and 17
others also were convicted as
"co-authprs of crimes against
Dominican state security'' and
of seeking to promote armed
revolt in this country. The
