6,094 carlots of perishables in
spected at Oregon shipping
points brought the fiscal year
count to 13,991 cars.
This included potatoes for
processing and some onions
and advanced the total for the
year as of Nov. 1 by more
than 1,244 cars.
The Department said pota

Former Local Pastor
The Rev. Ernest Storer
Bartlam, 78, former rector of
St. Mark's Episcopal church,
Medford, died in a Winslo'w,
Wash., rest home Monday.
He was born in Birming
ham, England, May 2, 1881,
and attended Clare college,
Cambridge university, Eng
land, before coming to the
United States in 1901. Mr.
Bartlam attended the church
divinity school of the Pacific
at Berkeley, Calif., and was
ordained May 16, 1916.
Mr. Bartlam was rector of
the local church between 1934
and 1939, when he became
rector of St. Mark's church in
Eugene. Prior to his local pas
torate, he was affiliated with
churches' in San Francisco,
Calif., Red Bluff, Calif., and
Sacramento, Calif.
He retired June 1, 1953,
and moved to Win slow,
Wash., in 1954.
Survivors ' include his wi
dow, Mrs. Marion E. Bartlam,
Winslow, Wash.; one son, the
Rev. E Percy Bartlam, Jones
boro, Ark., three grandchil
dren and- three great grand
children. Funeral services were
scheduled at 3 o'clock this
afternoon at St. Barnabas
Episcopal church, Winslow,
with interment in Hillcrest
cemetery in Winslow, Wash.

Stained Glass Windows
Damaged by B-B Shots
A routine inspection of the
stained glass windows at First
Presbyterian church last week
by the American Art Glass
company, Sacramento, Calif.,
revealed about $450 damage
to windows in the building,
city police were notified
Tuesday.
Reports show that B-B holes
were found in three of the
windows on the Eighth st.
side of the building and one
window on Holly st. All four
are of stained glass making it
necessary to replace the en
tire window, it was reported.

damaged, state police said.
A two-car collision occur

Grants Pass, suffered cuts and
bruises early this morning as
a result of an accident two
miles north of Rogue River
on Highway 99.

End of Pollution
Demands Continued

Sanitary Authority was hang
ing tough today on its de
mands that the city of Port
land stop polluting the Wil
lamette and Columbia rivers.
The Authority refused Tues
day to recommend dismissal
of a legal action against Port
land seeking to force the city
to abate pollution. However,
in compliance with a request
from Circuit Judge Frank
Lonergan that the state and
city mediate differences, the
Authority approved a 60-day
postponement of a scheduled
Nov. 30 hearing.
The 49 states in the Union
during, the fiscal year ended
June 30, 1959, collected a to
tal of 15.8 billion in taxes, an
increase of six per cent over
1958, reports the U. S. Census
Bureau. . '

James Crowe, Monday plead
ed guilty in Marion county
District Court to a charge of
driving without an operator's
license and was fined $500
and sentenced to six months
in jail.
The charge was filed follow
ing ah accident near here Aug.
1 in which two Salem youths,
pedestrians, were killed. A
charge of negligent homicide

but a Circuit Court jury freed
him of that charge last week.
The court gave Crowe credit
for the four months he has
spent in jail awaiting trial.

Portland Robbery
Suspect Captured
Portland - (UPD - The Broad
way. theater was held up here
Tuesday night but a suspect
was tackled in a parking lot
a short distance away by two
employees.
Being held was Ralph
Young Gaffin, about 60.
Police said the holdup man
got about $118 from the ticket
window but that he was seen
by Herb Royster, 62, theater
manager, and another em
ployee, Sid Phillips. They
chased the holdup man into a
parking lot; tackled him and
called police.
