Continued Wintry Weather Forecast for
ivaTiOR in iMexT ou iays, oureau aays
Suitland, Md. - (Science
Service) Continued wintry
conditions for much of the
nation during the coming 30
days has been predicted by
the Weather Bureau's extend
ed forecast section.
Onlv brief Deriods of rela
tive warmth will break the
cold spell gripping the coun
try's mid-section from the
Rocky to the' Appalachian
Mountains. The outlook for
the period mid-November to
mid - December 'calls . for
temperatures, to . average be
low seasonal : normals over
this area as -well as in the
Pacific Northwest-
Coldest weather is predict
ed for the Central and
Northern Plains, which have
already borne the force of two
raging blizzards since Nov. 9.
Abov Normal Readings
Above normal temperatures
are forecast for the far
Southwest and also along the
Atlantic coastal strip. In un
specified areas, near normal
temneratiires are expected.-
PreciDitation. much oi it in
the form of snow because of
the cold temperatures, is fore
cast to exceed normal over
the eastern third of the nation
and . the; far Southwest, in
eluding the central and south
ern West Coast, as well as
th Northern Plains. "
All other areas of the coun
try are expected to , record
near normal amounts, except
for snhnormal over the Pa
cific Northwest.
Reason for the unseason
ably cold, waves pouring
riown into the nation's mid
die is seen in the world-wide
weather' pattern, .Jerome
Namias, head of the bureau's
extended forecast section, told
kScience Service.
Present Pattern
He said the Dresent pattern,
with strong north-south winds
instead nf v the usual wester
lies, allowed the cold Arctic
air to sweep much farther
south than normal. It also
brings warm, moist air from
the Gulf up the East Coast.
Where these two conflicting
air masses meet, the stage is
set for violent weather.
; The world-wide pattern is
governed by a series of four
extensive ridges and troughs
in the globe-circling river of
air-known as the planetary
wave. The trouehs are ot
very large amplitude, cover
ing thousands of miles from
trough to trough. The four
are now found: one over the
middle of the U.S.; one from
east of Britain stretching
southward into the Mediter
ranean: one iust inside the
Asiatic coast and one in the
central Pacific. ;
The cold, stormy weather
sweeps down over areas
where the troughs are, batter
ing not only the central U.S.
but also Britain and Europe.
LION CUB "Duke" isn't a very big Masai lion yet, and the
loudest roar he can muster is a cat-like purr. The day-old
San Diego Zoo cub weighs 4 pounds and drinks milk from
a baby bottle. , (UPI Telephoto)

Firemen Are Called
Waterfoml, N.Y. -rtlPB-Two
youngsters and an adult tried
to play ' "Good Samaritan"
Friday, but did not do very
well .at it.
The three , tried to rescue
a boy who had fallen into
Sugar Loaf pond here. Fire
men finally rescued all four.
: Bobby Malo and Kenneth
Galarneau, both . 10, told
authorities that a friend,
Bruce Brisson, 7, fell into the
pond ' while sliding on thin
ice. The two youngsters tried
to help the boy and fell in.
Aman identified as a "Mr.
Blowers" heard the boys'
cries and brought planks to
help them but he also fell
in.
Volunteer firemen used
ropes to pull the four out of
the frigid waters. All were re
ported in good condition.
