Soap Box Column Turns .
To Quiz Show Scandal
Baptist Women Slate Meetings
By GAY PAULEY
UPI Women's Editor
New York - (UPD - Today's
column becomes a soap box
for those who read its recent
remarks on the television quiz
show fixes, even though some
of the readers read me out. '
But readers deserve to be
heard whether they bless you
or suggest the only reason you
weren't ever on a quiz show
is that you weren't bright
enough to pass the initial test.
By way of background, this
column on the television quiz
show mess denounced no one.
It merely inquired into the
state of our morals today and
wondered whether others
were shocked or in agreement
with the one woman who
said. "He-Charles Van Doren
had a chance to get some
thing for nothing and I don't
blame him for doing it."
As of today, most of the
letters see the TV quiz fixes
as a reflection generally of a
nation's deteriorating morals.
Others denounce me for mak
ing "Charles Van Doren the
whipping boy." I didn't in
tend to, honest.
". . . Thanks to you for your
battle of deception versus
truth'," wrote Mrs. Helena B.
Collins, Santa Rosa, Calif.
'Stand Firm!' ,
Edward W. Verba of Camp
bell, Ohio, wrote that "if the
transition were made to box
ing, any boxer who partici
pates in a fixed fight is held
in contempt by the majority
of boxing fans . . .
"I agree with your article
... on the scandal."
Mrs. E. H. Speckman, Tor
rance, Calif., holds no, brief
for a fixed show. But her let
ter comments, "I'm getting
sick and tired of Charles Van
Doren being chosen as the
whipping boy . . . just because
he made his mistakes 'on
camera'.
"What about those people
behind the scenes who thought
up the whole stinking mess .
. . they are just as guilty if
not more so . . ." ,
Mrs. Speckman added that
"if you newspaper people are
going to nail one guilty man
to the mast, find one big
enough for all (she underlined
the word) those involved.
". . . Try counting on your
10 fingers the people you (un
derlined) know who have nev
er (underlined) been involved
in some sort of a shaded idea.
No one is perfect. Even a con
vict is given a second chance
