provide for their comfort
and care, under the VA dom
iciliary system.

Regular visits of. repre
sentatives of the American
Legion, VFW, DAV, WWIC,
Gold Star Mothers, Blue Star
Mothers, Garden Clubs, and
other agencies from the near
by towns of Medford, Ash
land, Grants Pass, Eagle
Point, Shady Cove and Rogue
River are part of the pro
gram. In addition, there are many
whose interest centers in the
recreational interests of the
men, exemplified by a hobby
fair of. arts and crafts, held
each spring,-baseball games
at the new Camp White sta
dium, field day events, pic
nics at the recently complet
ed . picnic area, during the
summer, and general interest
noted on holidays.
Many of the visitors come
from more distant points, in
cluding Klamath Falls, Cave
Junction, Coos Bay,. Cottage
Grove, Eugene, Salem and
Portland in Oregon, and parts
of Washington, Idaho and
Montana, as well . as such
northern California towns as
Dorris, Redding, Eureka and
Yreka.
The steady stream of vis
itors to the domiciliary does
not include several hundred
"official'' visitors, who regis
ter at the manager's office.
Baker Damage Suit
Case in Fifth Day
Baker-fflPD-The circuit court
trial' of a $175,000 damage
suit against Denver-Chicago
Trucking company and six
employees of the Oregon high
way department was in its
fifth day here today.
The plaintiff is Donald P.
Briscoe of Boise, Idaho. He
was driver of a bus which
collided with a parked Denver-Chicago
truck on Highway
30 six miles northwest of here
Sept. 3, 1957.
His suit contends that he
suffered multiple injuries and
that the highway department
employees were negligent in
their work by allegedly caus
ing dust clouds to obscure the
road. He also charged that the
truck was improperly parked.
Astoria Firm Gets
Overhaul Contract
Astoria - (UPD - The ' Astoria
Marine Construction company
has been awarded a $459,000
Navy contract for overhaul
and activation of three LSM's.
Work will start on Dec. 1
and be completed in mid
February of next year.

of the Rocky Moun
tain area appeared at a Civil
Aeronautics Board hearing to
day to support arguments that
Pacific air routes 'should be
extended beyond the coast to
interior points of the United
States.
Montana, Wyoming and the
Dakotas were scheduled to
present their cases at the
hearing-the second of three
ordered by President Eisen
hower to determine Trans
Pacific air routes for the next
decade.
Nine passenger airlines and
two cargo carriers are seek
ing new or expanded routes
in the area. The first hearing
was held Jn Honolulu, and
the second will open in Wash
ington, D.C., on Nov. 30.
Four cities and the state of
Washington . submitted their
requests during Thursday's
session. Each said the expand
ed service was needed be-
cause of its growth 'of popula
tion and business.
Opposition by Ex-Pilot
The only out-and-out oppo
sition came from a 70-year-old
former Navy pilot, Carlton D.
Palmer, who clashed with his
home city of San Diego. The
southern California city has
not presented it's .case yet.
Palmer said proposed new
direct service between San
Diego and Honolulu should
be denied because he claimed
San Diego's Lindberg airport
was unsafe. -
He said planes there were
endanged by a 285-foot high
hill near the runway and that
the flew directly over seven'
schools.
A. R. Allen, transportation
director of the Los Angeles
Chamber of Commerce, asked
for competitive flag service
on virtually all Pacific routes
from bis city.
Northwest Asks Extension
H. E. Franklin Jr., traffic
manager of the Tacoma,
Wash., Chamber of Com
merce asked that Northwest
Airlines be allowed to extend
its Seattle-Tokyo flights over
the great circle route to in
clude San Francisco and Los
Angeles.
Gus P. Backman, of the
Salt Lake City Chamber of
Commerce, said present serv
ice between the Utah city and
Honolulu was not satisfac
tory and that there should
be single, plane service be
tween the points.
Cooper Visits Russia
Unrecognized;. Says
Reds Need U.S. Movies

Hollywood (UPD - Gary Coop
er exchanged his "yep" and
"nope", with "da" and "nyet"
for six days in Russia where
he saw everything except a
Soviet movie.
As a combination tourist
movie exchange celebrity, the
long-legged star checked in at
the theater, ballet and opera,
rode the subways, lived it up
in restaurants and went com
pletely unrecognized.
"The Russiansjiaven't seen
an American movie in 25
years," Coop grinned. "They
wouldn't recognize any Holly
wood actors. 1
"A few of the officials and
big shots in the theatrical
world remembered me but
that was about it. From my
personal observation, I'd say
the best thing that could hap
pen in Russia is the showing
of American movies." '
Film Draws Raves
'' Cooper was on hand for the
first showing of "Marty"-the
1955 Oscar winner-which re
ceived rave reviews from Mos
cow critics.
"Dubbing the Russian lan
guage into the film was ter
rific," Cooper acknowledged,
'but it was amazing to listen
to Ernest. Borgnine spouting
Russian." : , . ' '
The big guy expressed pity
for the Russians. .
"Everyone is sort of grim
over there," he said. "You
don't see much smiling going
on. Maybe it's because they
haven't had much to smile
about in the past 40 years.
They work plenty hard, and I
guess that's about all they
have to do with themselves.
"For some reason I got the
feeling that the people must
know what is going on in the
outside world. But that's im
possible. The only news they
get is what the bigwigs want
them to know."

Airport Increases
October air freight and pas
senger traffic at the Medford
airport deceased while air ex
press traffic more than
doubled, in comparison to last
year's totals for the same
month. .
The airport department's
monthly report showed total
passenger traffic was 5,252,
compared to 5,724 in October,
1958. Freight traffic declined
from 29,150 pounds to last
month's total, 15,239 pounds.
While passenger and
freight decreased, express in
creased from 3,483 pounds
in October, 1958, to last
month's total of 6,845.
Total revenue for the
month was $4,484.53.
