St. Mary's Overwhelms
Sherman Eleven 34-0 in
Oregon Prep
St. Mary's of Medford on
Saturday night became the
third team in Jackson county
to enter semi-final contention
for Oregon' high school foot
ball laurels. '
Winning with surprising
ease, the Crusaders of the
Pear city thumped Sherman
of Moro 34 to 0 at the Med
ford stadium in a Class B prep
quarterfinal brush. Victory
sends St. Mary's next Friday
or Saturday against McEwen
of "Athena on a field of the
northeastern Oregon school's
choice. That winner will meet
either Yoncalla or Knappa on
Nov. 27 or 28 in the B school
titular game.
Arrangements for the St.
Mary's-McEwen semifinal had
not been announced this
morning.
The Crusaders joined Med
ford (Class A-l) and Phoenix
(A-2) among the schools com
peting in three classes, in re
spective rounds of four.
St., Mary's utilizing two
long pass completions, but
sticking mainly to the ground,
lashed out with sharp offense
that Husky ,' gridders . just
couldn't stop. On defense the
stout resisting Crusaders only
once were called upon to
make a desperate goal line
stand.
With Dick Evans and Alex
Mete mainly packing in an at
tack directed by Dick's broth
er, Bob, and with Bob Evans
hurling to Roger Hout for
long gains, the Medford paro
chial contingent drove to
touchdowns on their first two
scrimmage marches. Dick
Evans went across from five
yards out on each of these
campaigns.
Then Tom Tomjack, came
up with the" ball in the scram
ble for a fumble and ran-15
yards to score. St. Mary'.s
barged off the second half
kickoff to pick up another
touchdown. Dick Evans reach
ed the goal again. He went the
last 12 yars. Joe Kaiser, an
eager, hard running sopho
more went 12 yards also to
TD the final -time.
Bob Evans, doing the kick
ing because Terry Cooper
hurt his foot on the initial
goalward drive, booted t four
extra points in five attempts.
TD Play Canceled
Crusader quarter margins
were 14 to 0, 21 to 0 and 28
to 0.
St. Mary's had a touchdown
play nullified by penalty.
Sherman's biggest, push was
stopped on the SM nine. The
Huskies otherwise got no clos
er to TD land than the Cru
sader 40.
Tomjack, George Lucas,
Don MacPherson and Roger
Hout were line sparks in the
strong SM attack. On defense
Don Rausch, Mike Moore,
Fred Lucas and Dick Evans
were among the pillars in giv
ing Sherman a scoreless night.
Sherman's Huskies bid
strong on offensive only in
the first two quarters of the
game and 180 pound Terry
Kaseberg was the . major
threat. John Fields grossed
fair yardage for' the evening
but losses, cut down his net.
The Moro club could be thank
ful to its secondary that SM
did not run up a higher score.
Fields, Kaseburg and Larry
Middleton were in on stops
most often. In the line 215
pound Bill. Archer was a boy
who held . his ground . right
well. .'. v-
SM Heads Yardage
: St.. Mary's dominated the
game's net' yard statistics.
Tabulations of Jack Ballan
tyne, official statistician, gave
the Crusaders a 315 to 201
bulge with penalties subtract
ed The Mail Tribune's unoffi
cial totals showed a 271 to
lil St. Mary's net rushing
and passing edge. Sherman
was held to 78 net yards rush-ing-just
five in the second
half-while the Crusaders col
lected 202-
The Medford club traveled
77 yards in 11 plays for its
first score. Big gainer was the
Evans to Hout pass for 38
yards which put the ball on
the Moro seven-yard line for
first down. Bob Evans then
Mi
Quarterf inal
was held for no gam and
Mete picked up two yards.
Dick Evans ploughed over
right tackle to the goal. :
After stopping a Husky
push on the SM 48 yard line
and forcing a Sherman punt,
the Crusaders took over on
their 27 to set a 73-yard drive
in motion. A clipping infrac
tion almost wrecked the
promenade but a 31-yard Bob
Evans to Hout pass got the
home team out of trouble. The
aerial put the ball on the
Sherman 34. Seven plays later
Dick Evans made another five
yard scoring plunge. '
Tomjack Scores on Fumble '
Sherman got only five yards
in three plays after the kick
off to bring up a punting sit
uation. The snap from center
was bad and would-be punter
Kaseburg also fumbled. In the
scramble Tomjack came up
with the ball and ran 15 yards
to cross the goal.- .
The Moro team next moved
out from its 30 on its biggest
surge. A personal foul call
against St. Mary's gave impe
tus to the drive. This was off
set some by a Sherman off
side but with 13 rushing and
passing plays the ball was
taken to the nine. An incom
plete pass .on fourth down
ended the opportunity. St.
Mary's took over and two
plays later the half time signal
sounded.
Spread plays gained good
ground for the Huskies on
the march but they tightened
up the T as they neared the
goal and the Crusaders held.
St. Mary's drove 40 yards
to the end zone after the sec
ond half boot. Eight plays
took the Medfordites to the
Moro 25. Hout got behind de
fenders on a deceptive passing
play and was an easy target
for Bob Evans. But offside
canceled out this scoring
play. The Crusaders were set
back to the 30. -. .
Cooper. Goes 14 '
Another pass failed but Ter
ry Cooper boomed for 14
yards on a finely executed
draw play. Mete made four
more to the 12 and Dick
Evans scored off a double re
verse after almost being
caught by;E. Hawkins for a
loss. ' ; .' ,
Fumble recoveries by Bob
Evans and Bill Smith in the
final quarter helped hold
back the Huskies. A pass in
terception by Kaseberg also
momentarily stopped St.
Mary's. But , Mike Moore
dropped Sherman quarterback
Jim Duncan for a 12-yard loss
on the Moro 12. Hout took
Kaseberg's punt and ran it
back 28 yards to the Husky
16. Marv McGee made four
yards. Then Kaiser crashed to
the goal. Kaiser got credit for
the TD although he lost the
ball as it went into the end
zone and Hout retrieved the
fumble. .
Dick Evans was the night's
big yardage gainer with 91
on 14 carries. Mete had 48
for 13. .

Washington Retains
Bowl Inside Track
By HAL WOOD
United Press International
The Pacific Coast's football
powerhouses survived s o m e
scary moments Saturday - but
they came through with fly
ing colors to keep open the
race for the Rose Bowl and
high national ratings.
Washington,' the team with
the Inside track for the Rose
Bowl, was held scoreless by
California for all except one
minute'of the first half - then
romped to an easy 20-0 vie- i
tory.. ;
Southern California could
gaurohly a -3-0 lead over Bay
lor througlif the' first three
quarters - and then raced to
a 17-8 triumph.
Oregon had to come from
behind in the last 17 seconds
of play to score a 7-6 victory
over Washington State.
Idaho, which hasn't won a
game all .year, scored first
against College of Pacific, but
the Tigers came . back for a
28-13 triumph.
And so it went with the
major clubs. Stanford upset
Oregon State, 39-22, being in
front all the way over a team
that was a one-touchtown fa
vorite. .
Rivals Meet This Week
But this week it will be a
different story. Every ' team
engages in an ancient back
yard rivalry, where form
usually is tossed out the win
dow. .;
Oregon, which still hopes !
for a Rose Bowl bid, plays
Oregon State in the West's
oldest rivalry. This will be
the 63rd meeting between the
two teams.
California and Stanford,
not going any place, tangle in
the 62nd annual "Big Game"
at Stanford:
Washington and Washing
ton State will meet for the
52nd time.
Southern California and
UCLA will be battling for the
29th time in the southland.
College of Pacific and San
Jose State meet for the 35th
time.
Fine Saturday Performances
Saturday's battles develop
ed some of the finest football
of the season.' Washington got
a great performance from full
back Bob Jackson, who pick
ed up 105 yards from scrim
mage to lead the Huskies to
victory. Washington was
penalized 163 yards during the
game which ruined - their
first-half scoring efforts.
Washington State led Ore
gon, 6-0, , from the second
quarter to the final minute of
fplay. Then Willie West romp
ed over from the two and,
with 17 seconds remaining,
Roger Daniels Tcicked the all
important point to keep Ore
gon's bowl hopes alive.
