"My family will continue
to eat cranberries in spite of
the publicity on aminotria-

pany . which produces the
chemical spray, told the au
dience at the Oregon Weed
Conference Friday afternoon.
Clark Amen, Corvallis,
salesman for the American
Cyanamid company, said "it
should be stressed that this
spray does not produce acute
toxicity (not poisonous), nor
does it have a short-use tox
icity." .
"In experimental animals,
the amount of aminotriazole
that constitutes a lethal does
is so high that the product
may be said to be practically
devoid of acute toxicity," ac
cording to the prepared state
ment of the salesman read.
"One may conclude from the
extensive, evidence available
that it would be practically
impossible for an individual to
absorb a harmful dose of am
inotriazole from any small
number of exposures."

"In some rats, the effort of i
the thyroid gland to compen- j

over a period of a lifetime, j
led to the development of thy- j

were judged to be malignant," j

normal. Dogs received the
same test without any visible
effects, Amen reported.
This inhibition of the thy
roid is an effect produced by
many chemical compunds in
cluding some compounds
which occur naturally in food
stuffs, and -some pesticide
chemicals for which residue
tolerances have been set, ac
cording to Amen.
Eventual development of
tumors required continous
daily absorption of aminotria
zole over a period equivalent
to many years of human life,
Amen pointed out
"We would have to con
sume 2Vfe to 3 pounds of the
actual chemical and that
would only kill about 50 per
cent of us. It would be almost
impossible to get that much
down," Amen said.
. The conference did not go
on record regarding the chem
ical and its relation to cran
berry spraying.
In a telephone conversation,
County Extension Agent
George Jenkins, Coquille, said
only a small percentage of
the cfanberry growers in his
area had used the chemical at
all and even a smaller per
centage had sprayed before
harvesting the berries. Ore
gon cranberries have a gross
income of about $50,000, he
said. Since this is the second
consecutive crop withheld
from the market many of the
growers may be hard hit fi
nancially, he noted. The Co
quille area crop is shipped to,
southwest Washington for
processing.
