Attempts at Suicide
Everyone should know that
any person who is badly de
pressed is likely to be think
ing of suicide, and perhaps
wishing that he had the cour
age or the opportunity or the
means with which to do away
with himself. Often the per
son is convinced that his fam
ily would be
much better
off if only he
were out of
the way
Many of these
people are
o verwhelmed
with feelings
of sinfulness,
or feelings of
having been
cut off entirely from God and
His grace. Some of them com
mit suicide when voices tell
them to. For instance; a man
who was depressed over hav
ing lost nearly all of his for
tune in the stock market, was
sitting one day on a beach,
when a voice, apparently at
his ear, said, "Go out there
and drown yourself; you are
a total failure, and the world
would be a much better place
without you." And so he wad
ed right out into the water
and soon had to be fished out
by' a life guard.
There have been a num
ber of studies made of sui
cides and of the notes these
people left ty the people who
did commit suicide, and by
those who only half-heartedly
attempted it. The conclusion
was that there was a differ
ence. One could see that the
person who was sure he was
going to leave this world dis
posed of some personal mat
ters in an irrevocable way,
A while ago, in San Francis
co, Drs. Motto and Green
made a study of 175 succes
sive cases of suicide, and 197
admissions to hospitals for at
tmps alj suicide. In the ma
jority of these cases the per
son had been under medical
and perhaps psychiatric care
for a month or more preced
ing the attempt. This story
is always very significant
when, as often happens, there
is a question whether a per
son's death was due to an ac,
cident. It he was depressed
and under psychiatric treat
ment, and if perhaps an uncle
and a grandfather had com
mitted suicide, the chances
are it was not an accident.
Third , Choose Poisoning
In onethird of the San Fan
cisco cases the method chosen
was poisoning with a barbit
uate sleep-maker. In another
study made in Los Angeles,
Drs. Schneidman and Farber
ow showed that in 75 per cent
of these cases, the person had
previously threatened suicide
or had attempted it. So many
people today say, "If a person
threatens suicide, he or she
won't do it" But this obvious
ly.is not true. "

is most in danger of commit
ting suicide about the time be

much improved. Then he has
.strength and energy enough
to go seriously at the job of
suicide which he has been
thinking about for a long
time. .
One big reason why many
a psychotic patient should be
urged to go into, a mental
hospital is that there he will
have some protection against
this tendancy to self-destruction.
Unfortunately, even in
mental hospitals many a pa
tient manages to take his own
life.
In the Journal of the Amer
ican Medical Association
there was a fine article by a
number of physicians on psy
chiatric emergencies in gen
eral practice. As one of the
doctors pointed out,- often if
the patient has a family phys
ician whom he trusts and
likes, this man can easily talk
him into going voluntarily to

that several, times I have per
suaded a much disturbed man
to commit himself. All I had
to do was to get him to admit
that he had been doing a lot
of foolish things which wor
ried his old mother "half to
death", and had sadly deplet
ed the family finances. Per
haps, occasionally, the man
had attacked a stranger and
injured him. Also, he was in
danger of committing suicide.
He needed to be taken care
of and treated and kept from
rambling around the country.
He needed to be cured so that
he could get back to his job,
and there again start support
ing his wife and children.
Many a time, after I have
chatted with such a patient,
he has said, "Yes, Doctor, you
are right, I ought to be in a
hospital." Sometimes, then,
he has said he would commit
himself, but only under-certain
conditions. For instance,
his father, whom he hated,
was to have nothing to do
with the affair. He would go
only if his brother or his bro-ther-in-laV
would take him.
In these cases I had to con
vince the family that all
promises made to the patient
would have to be kept to the
letter.
Patients Complain
As the doctors said in the
big article in the J.A.M.A.,
many patients, when going
insane, complain only of a
disturbed heart action, a
stomach ache, pains here and
there, insomnia, or a feeling
of great toxicity or fatigue.
Today, they generally get
from us doctors, not the help
ful chat that the need, but a
lot of laboratory tests, x-ray
films and then perhaps an op
eration. The trouble is that
we doctors were never
trained in the field of psychi
atry. We thought that in our
practice we would never see
a mentally disturbed patient
but we couldn't have been
more wrong. As some 400
general practitioners recently
reported in answers to a ques
tionnaire, one in four of their
patients has a psychiatric
problem.
