Playhouse 90's Plan
Of Uncanny Timeliness
Paces Television Show
By FRED DANZIG
New "York -4UPD - Playhouse

plan of uncanny timeliness
Thursday night.
"The Hidden Image," by
David Karp, deals with politi

humanity and integrity, sub
jects that much of today's na

with. '
The author pressed home
the point that only the dead
are .invulnerable to tempta
tion and it is the test of a man
when he can fight it off.!The
play's timely message is one
thing, however, and its inef
fectiveness is another. I felt
Karp cluttered his story with
too many gimmicks, inconsis
tencies and contrived situa
tions, to set i up his leading
character, played by Franchot
Tone, for the final display of
undiluted integrity.
Repttitiye Dialogue
His straining to keep the
play goiqg until the climactic
last few minutes made for
some rather repetitive dia
logue and meaningless razzle
dazzle in the play's middle.
Tone,, as' an honest, but
cold, impersonal political boss
becomes, embroiled in an in
vestigating committee's effort
to discredit, him and, through
him, his candidate for gover
nor. The charge is that Tone
fed juicy building contracts

There is no concrete evi
