Chicago - (UPD - AFL-CIO
President George Meany as
sured railroad workers Thurs
day night "you will have all
the support you need" in their
contract battle with the na
tion's railroads. . -
"You are not in this fight
alone," Meany told a wildly
cheering crowd of 1,000 rail
road workers at a mass union
rally.
"This is no ordinary battle.
It is a fight for your existence
and you will win it."
Meany accused railroad
management of trying to
"turn back the clock 50-years
-or even a century by elimi
nating the fruits of collective
bargaining that have been so
hard fought for and . have
proved so successful."
Rail Demands
The railroads recently de
manded that the railway
workers accept a pay cut and
sought to eliminate firemen
from freight and yard loco
motives, a move' the union
said would cost 35,000 jobs.
Railway management, Mea
ny said, has enlisted the help
of "Madison Avenue adver
tisers, half awake writers"
who have made "a science of
deceit" by misrepresenting
the facts in the labor manage
ment dispute.
"Hitler did it," Meany said,
"just like Stalin did and
Khrushchev is .dong now."
Tearing Down Character
Meany said that through a
well-financed publicity cam
paign the nation's railroad
executives are trying to "tear
down the character of the
American railroad workers in
the eye of the public by des
cribing them as feather
bedders." Sen. Wayne Morse (D-Ore.)
told the group that an all
out fight against trade union
progress was being waged by
anti- union forces across the
country.

Toll Reaches 154
Portland - (UPD - The State
Board of Health today de
clared 1959 the worst polio
year in Oregon since Salk
vaccine was pressed into use
in 1955.
Toll of the polio epidemic
rose to 154 with nine more
.cases reported last week. Of
the total 12 have been par
alytic. Last year, only 34 cases
had been reported, 21 par
alytic.
The board also reported
that Oregon has reached an
all-time high in influenza
cases with the .1959 total
standing at 52,622 cases.
Some 462 new cases were re
ported last week.
An epidemic of infectious
hepatitis appeared to be slow
ing down, according to the
weekly report. Seventeen
new cases were reported last
week, boosting the year's
total to 701, fourth highest in
Oregon history.
Douglas county, apparent
center of the outbreak, re
ported two new cases to up
the yearly total to 135.

ering record of 22 hours on
the Senate floor in order to
fight "the alarming anti-labor
drive going on and building
up in legislatures.
Management Accused
Morse accused railroad
management of ignoring the
Railway Labor Act in trying
to reach agreement.
"It is the best labor law on
the books but management
has ' refused any efforts to
reach agreement by rules of
the act that have been, used
successfully for years,", he
said.

What happened to the "car sounds" you
used to think were normal? The little bangs and
thuds that once were part of even the luxury cars?
They're gone, in the new Plymouth built
out of it from the start. They won't return later '
to haunt you, because this car is built to stay
quiet for a long, long time. - .
In addition to quiet durability, you will
notice new comfort. We doubt if any car has
ever ridden so easily, or held the road with
such secure steadiness. There is more room inside
and good news! the seats are much higher.
, . We feel that this Plymouth is the best built,
best performing car in the low-price class. Try
it and see what you think.

Med ford Council
s Ordinance
Smoking
Adopt
Governing
The Medford city council
last night passed an ordi
nance prohibiting "the sale,
barter, trade or furnishing of
tobacco to any person under
the age of 18 years, and pro
hibiting the use or possession
of tobacco by any person un
der the age of 18."
The ordinance, which mak
es city law conform with re
cent state legislation, was
passed 6 to 2, with Council
man Robert Van Sickle and
Donald Hansen voting.no.
Van Sickle said he voted no
because he believed such an
ordinance may be -an infringe
ment on the rights of the in
dividual, and that such an or
dinance would be almost im
possible to enforce.
Public hearings were held
on two 'requests . for zone
changes, but action was de
ferred until - after a joint
meeting of the council and
planning commission at which
the requests will be consider
ed.. One was on a request to
change from Class IA, single
family, to Class IV, limited
light industrial, property on
Biddle rd. north of the Med
ford Shopping Center.. The
other was on a - request to
change from Class IA,: single
family, to'. Class II, multiple
family, for property on Cra
ter Lake ave. between Main
and Jtfckson sts.
Ronald L. Ricketts, Med
ford lawyer, spoke on behalf
of those who petitioned for
the change on Biddle rd. He
said they plan to develop the
area, and would construct a
building to house the firms
which must vacate their pres
ent property soon. " -SeveraL
persons : appeared,.
both in favor and in opposi
tion, to the change to multiple
family zone on Crater Lake
ave.
Dr. Bernard T. Thompson,
26 Crater Lake ave., said the
change, if approved, would
invite development of an area
which seems to be declining.
He said there is now some
multiple family use in . the
area involved.
Professional Offices
Dr. Thompson said profes
sional offices probably would
be developed in the area if
it is changed.
Dr. Fred Lorish, 830 Min
nesota ave., opposed the
change, saying that he believ
ed there is sufficient proper
ty available for professional
office development. He also
said that if the property is
changed to multiple family, it
would leave an island of sin
gle family residences, which
probably would be changed
in the near future.
He said Tie does not feel
that properties in the area,
proposed for change are declining.
Both the requests were de
nied by the planning commis
sion at public hearings.
The commisison felt that
while the Biddle rd. property
is indicated on the land use
plan as industrial with condi
tional uses to be approved by
the commission, the group
felt that their studies had not
progressed to the extent that
conditional uses could be de
fined. -
The commission denied the
request for the Crater Lake
ave. change because it is in
the 'process of developing a
new multiple family zoning
oridance,; but had not at the
time completed its studies. .
A public hearing'on paving
an alley between Central ave.
and Front st. from Ninth to
Tenth sts. was terminated af
ter two persons withdrew
their names from the original
petition seeking improve
ment. Their' withdrawals
dropped the number of peti
tion signers to less than 50
per cent of the property own
ers, and therefore could , not
be accepted as an official peti
tion., V; : '. v
. Those who withdrew, their
names : said they did so be
cause the estimated price was
too high. When they original
ly signed the petition, they
said, the estimated price was
quoted as lower and within
reason. . --. -
