America Soon Will
Try To End Russia's
Moon Shot Control

America In a lew weeks will
try to end Russia's monopoly
on original pictures of the
moon's "farside' surface.
A scanning device will be
contained in the 373-pound
payload the new Atlas-Able
rocket will try to throw into
orbit around the moon. U. S
hopes of getting the first pic
tures of i h e lunar backside
went up in the explosion that
claimed the first Atlas-Able
Sept. 24. ' .
The "farside" is the 41 per
cent of the moon's surface
which, because its period of
rotation almost coincides with
its orbit around, the earth, is
not" seen 'from the mother
globe.
Earlier this month, Russia's
Lunik III was whirled into an
eight-shaped orbit around the
moon and the earth. The pic
tures it took of the farside
- were recently released to the
"free world.
The Atlas-Able, standing
about 125 feet tall and utiliz
ing an Atlas ICBM in the first
stage, is the biggest, most
powerful space vehicle ever
put together in the western
hemisphere. But its satellite
is considerably smaller than
the 602-pound weight of the
Lunik HI payload.
However, the U. S. lunar
"probe will have several duties
outside that of taking pic
tures. It will study properties
of space between the earth
and the moon, on the lunar
body's mass and on shape, sur
face details and .composition
. of the earth's biggest neighbor.
The picture-taking will be
done by facsimile system,
resembling a television cam
era, developed by the Space
Technology Laboratories
(STL). A mirror inside a tube
focuses light .and dark areas
An electronic counter com
putes and records the impres
sions.
This material would ,be
stored while the moonlet was
in transit across the 'farside."
When the satellite came back
into the line with the earth,
the impressions would be
changed into radio signals apd
radiated across the thousands
of miles to receiving centers
on earth.
The signals would be trans
lated through a rever s pro
cedure to produce ' "ctures
that scientists hope V At show
more details of the moon's
"farside." In general, the Lu
nik shots showed the other
side to be mostly vast plains.
Another gadget that will be
aboard is a device designed
to maintain temperature con
trol instde the instrumented
compartment in the face of
wildly fluctuating space-type
temperatures, which can
range from near zero absolute
to" the boiling point of water
within minutes.
This unit, also developed by
STL, would utilize the absorp-J
tiou and reflection qualities'
of black and white surfaces,
operating when highest and
lowest temperatures are
reached.
An ultra-small electronic
brain will relay information
from the satellite to earth in
the form of radio signal im
pulses. This is a digital unit
to gather and relay data con
cerning scientific information
gleaned by the "other instru
ments.'
The main stations for re
ceiving the probe data will
be the huge Jodrell bank ra
dio telescope near Manches
ter, England, and a 60-foot
diameter radio telescope ope
rated by the Air Force in
Hawaii.
