vaudevillians, and later as Broadway
stars of "The Bandwagon" and "Funny
Face," swear this was a partnership
that can never be duplicated. But
movie fans who remember the great
Astaire-Rogers films of the 30s say
the same. Titles such as "Flying Down
to Rio," "Top Hat," and "Shall We
Dance?" bring a sigh of nostalgia
from filmgoers who claim the worst
thing thaj ever happened to Fred
Astaire was Ginger's decision to give
up musicals for straight roles.
Perhaps Fred felt this was true, for
in the six years from 1939 to 1945 he
danced in films with no fewer than six
partners: Eleanor Powell, Paulette
Goddard, Marjorie Reynolds, Rita
Hayworth, Joan Leslie, and Lucille
Bremmer. Some of these films, nota
bly "Broadway Melody of 1940" and
"Holiday Inn," still draw customers,
either to old film houses or to the TV
screen. But Fred's lack of satisfaction
was reflected in his decision in 1945
to retire from dancing and devote his
time to production and choreography.
Fortunately he changed his mind
and in 1948 came out of "retirement"
to dance with Judy Garland in Irving
Berlin's "Easter Parade." It was so
successful that he made a new series
of movies with Betty Hutton, Jane
Powell, Vera -Ellen, Cyd Charisse,
Leslie Caron, and Audrey Hepburn.
Finally, last year, at an age when
many people call it quits, Fred started
a new career in television. He also
found a new partner in Barrie Chase,
who shared honors with him. Barrie
comments, "The greatest opportunity
a dancer could have is to dance with
Fred Astaire."

We re not having a new recreation center in our town.
We're not having a new courthouse, either.
We are having a new city hall, because the old one
almost fell down around the mayor's ears and falling
plaster hit the chief of police.
In our town, we don't go to the polls unless somebody
wants to build a rendering works in the last downtown
park and then, of course, we all vote against it.
But we don't very often vote for anything. We have
an ancient maxim: If you're an aginner, you'll be right
75 percent of the time. We like to be right
The militant minority in our town used to be progres
sive. It's composed of the people who work on committees
to make our town a better place to live. None of the peo
ple gets paid for doing this a foolish way to operate.
In our town, we vote our pocketbooks. Things like
"bond issue" and "allocation of city funds" and "tax levy"
can make us run faster than the threat of a Russian
reaching the moon.
"Better be safe than sorry," we opine. "What?" we cry.
"They're not going to put the courthouse there, are they?"
So we vote against the courthouse, any courthouse, and
pretty soon Justice falls off the top and misses the clerk
of the court by five inches. It gets so nobody wants to
serve on. a jury for fear he'll be killed not by the
defendant but by collapsing walls.
We belong to the heritage of our cautious forefathers.
We make haste slowly. We say discretion is the better
part of valor, and sometimes we're right.
So we vote No. If we vote. And we call it a protest vote
against the wild-eyed progressives who take a stand. Our
town is one of the largest in our state, but less than 5,000
turned out to vote on a new recreation center. And it
lost, of course.
That's not unusual in our town. We have a reputation
to maintain.
We're all in favor of progress. We just don't vote for it.
