Emotional Factors
Said to Meet

hearing loss, three scientists
reported to the Acoustical So
ciety of America meeting
here.
They have classified the
psychic causes of hearing loss
into three groups:
1. Availability, the exist
ence in a person's life his
tory of a "model" for -deaf
ness. This may be a period of
temporary, partial deafness or
close association with a 'deaf
person.
a. Necessity, the discomfort
fear or frustration resulting
from a person's attempt to ad
just to the world in which he
lives and for which he can
find no solution except to
shut out part of that world.
Maintenance Noted
3. Maintenance, the advan
tages or gains given to the
person because of his symp
tom, such as care and atten
tion from others around him,
exemption from certain ef
forts or difficulties on account
of his "handicap," a sense of
being "special."

Emotionally based hearing
losses;, thev believe, are so
common that their explana
tions apply to the life of vir
tually every person.
'Oraanicallv Deaf
Human beings, they report
ed, are organically deaf to
such high pitched sounds as
made by a dog whistle. Every
person is also to some extent
"psychically deaf," they
noted.
The child ' who hears "ice
. cream" more easily than the
similar sounding "wipe clean
and the mother who sleeps
through the alarm clock but
wakes instantly at the first
whimper of her sleeping in
fant are two commonplace ex
amples of selective percep
tion. The scientists attempted to
dkplain how emotional fac
tors operate tq select, what is
heard and not heard, and also
what particular psychic fac
tors may do the selecting.
Certain, Common Needs
They found their subjects
have-, certain common needs,
attitudes a n d biographical
facts that can be used to dis
tinguish 'deafness prone" in
dividuals. In the group they
studied, each person showed
a need to avoid, rather than
meet and solve, unpleasant or
highly charged situations. The
persons were also strikingly
wiling or anxious to sacrifice,
or -other debase or ; injure
themselves "for others."
Most characteristic, they
found; was the ability of their
experimental subiects to cre
ate and maintain a kind of
"fantasv world - not the
hallucinations of a psychotic
patient, but the wishful and
sometimes fearful dreams of
love and glory that all per
sons have, made more "'sutf
stantiaL more continuous and
more resistant to the distrac
tions of the workaday work.
Pills Counteract
Anticoagulants
Philadelphia. (Science Serv
ice) - Barbiturates, widely
used m sedatives or sleeping
pills, can interfere with the
. action of anticoagulant drugs
often prescribed to help ward
off j blood clots in patients
with heart or artery disease.
If barbiturates are taken
before anticoagulants, the
anti-clotting drugs lose their
effect, Dr. Murray Werner of
New : York City told the sci
entific session . of the Amer
ican Heart Association here
Studies in both animals and
humans, he said, showed Jhat
the bariturates ' apparently
prevent the anticoagulants
frob being absorbed. v When
sedatives; or sleeping pills
were given five hours - after
the anti-clotting drugs, how
ever, this inhibiting effect was
not seen.
