achievement" which should
spur this country to greater
efforts in space.
Urey agreed with other
scientists here that the Rus
sian photo vjzs not detailed
enough to warrant conclus
ions about the nature of the
moon's other side.
But he said it was impos
sible to exaggerate the tech
nical skill which enabled the
Russians to get the picture at
all. - , '
"It is time," Urey said Tues
day "that we get up out of
our chairs and begin to com
pete with them in space. It is
not good for us to kid our
selves that we are up with
them. We are not. I think it
will be years before we are."
Some astronomers, who did
not want to be quoted by
name, also stressed what one
called the "marvelous techni
cal accomplishment" mani
fested by the photograph.
One scientist said the tech
nique used by the Russians
could have tremendous mili

Bomber Crashes;
Crewmen Escape
Hattiesburg.Miss. (DPD A
huge B-58 jet, the -Air Force's
fastest and most modern
bomber, crashed and exploded
in a wooded area near here
Tuesday night. It carried a
crew of three civilian experts.
Officials said the big swept
wing plane did not carry a
nuclear device, as was earlier
reported from the crash scene.
Finding of a piece of wreck
age labeled, "caution radio
activity" led to the report.
' The three crewmen para
chuted from the craft at an
altitud of 25,000 feet.
The pilot, Evere t L. Wheel
er, 41, from Fort Worth, Tex.,
and a second crewman, Mich
ael F. Keller, also 41 and from
Fort Worth, were found short
ly after the crash. A third
crewman, Harry N. Blooser,
35, of the Fort Worth suburb
of Lake Worth, was reported
missing.
All were employed by Con
vair Aircraft Corp.

that absorb the wax or oil
layer on insect bodies, making
it impossible for them to re

200 peasants and churchmen
from his home district but no
ceremonies.
The Pope was chosen to
succeed Pope Pius XII a year
ago today. He was selected
by his fellows of the College
of Cardinals behind sealed
doors, 19 days after his pre
decessor's death. ' -
Pope John told his audience
that he would like to show
them around Rome but since
becoming Pope he is a "prison
er. . - ; ' '
"Unfortunately, I am a
prisoner," he said sadly. "I
cannot do what I want to do.
Every time there are 40
people who tell me what I
have to do.
"Each of these has a precise
job, just as I have the task of
being head of the church.
Each of these has the job to
counsel me." '
The Pope's special audience
with his former neighbors
ran nearly an hour beyond its
scheduled time.

imagine a sudden invasion of
our earth by aggressive war
riors from another celestial

"In such an emergency the
security forces of our world,
including the ' Soviet detach
ment, would cut a poor figure
against Martians , . . . If we
had, figuratively speaking,
only kitchen knives and pock
et slings to defend ourselves."
U. S., Russ Outlays
Said About Equal
Washington -(DPD- The U. S.
and Russian outlays for de
fense and related programs in
1960 will be about equal.
: The arms race will continue
at its present rate, barring
an abrupt change in the cur
rent uncheerful outlook for
controlled disarmament. The
space race will be intensified.
These forecasts came to
day from officials familiar
with the 1960 Soviet budget
just made public in Moscow
and with the new U. S. budget
being prepared to be sent to
Congress in January. "
Prospects are that the two
countries will continue to in
vest annually about 45 billion
dollars each in military and
related fields. "
Request To Return

co Tocca to come back to jail.
- Tocca, after finishing a 14
year murder sentence, asked
