Air Force Will
Inactivate Bases
Due to Missiles
Washington - (DPD - The Air
Force, in a new move empha
sizing the trend toward mis
iiles, announced Wednesday
that it will shut down a Ver
mont air base and inactive
three jet fighter squadrons in
Vermont, Ohio and New
York.
The Air Force said the ac
tion reflected the "changing
composition of the Air Force,
Involving increasing numbers
of missile units and decreas
ing numbers of aircraft
units."
At the same time, the Air
Force released $150 million
for work at previously an
nounced Intercontinental Bal
listic Missile bases.

disclosure in Dayton, Ohio

Force's authorized manpower
strength Is being cut by 20,-
000 men.
Not Up to Strength
The Air Force is not up to
Its authorized strength of 845,-
000, however, and will have
to reduce by only 8,000 men
to get down to its new level
of 825,000 by next June 30.
The manpowers cuts appar
ently are being ordered now
In anticipation of budget cuts
for personnel next year. They
reflect coming reductions in
air defense jet squadrons as
well as cutbacks in B47 Stra

. The Air Force currently
has 27 wings of fighter-interceptors
with three squadrons
to a wing. Today's move will

Grange Favors
Overall Basin Plan
Sams Valley Grange went
on record this week opposing
: construction of the Agate dam
before overall development of
the Rogue basin.
In a letter signed by Albert
Straus, Grange master, and
OR. A. James, secretary, and
i county commissioner, Con
gressman Charles O. Porter
was informed of the Grange's
feelings. f
"The Grange did vote unan-
lmously not to favor the con
. struction of the Agate dam or
any other dam being built
piecemeal from the overall
plan in the Rogue River Flood
Control Reclamation basin
program," the motion read.
"The Grange is in favor of
a full basin program accept
ance and authorization. Con
struction and development
then to follow. We sincerely
.hope you will give this plan
your fullest cooperation," the
' letter stated.
Shortages Due
In Fall, Winter
New York (UPD Consumers
i will feel the pinch of the na
tion's longest and most costly
steel strike this fall and win
ter in the form of shortages
of most cars, refrigerators and
other durable goods, Iron Age
magazine said Wednesday.
These shortages are not
likely to be critical, the trade
weekly said, but the con
sumer's range of choice will
be limited.
Many manufacturers of
these products have already
had to cut back or shut down
production , completely, the
magazine said. Regardless of
the date of the strike's end, it
added, further cutbacks for
weeks are inevitable.
Even auto plants with top
priority for new steel do not
expect to return to production
before three to five weeks af
ter the mills reopen, Irou Age
said.
Many appliance dealers are
. out of 1959 models, and next
year's models are slow com
ing in, the trade publication
said. This situation will grow
progressively worse until the
mills resume production.
