Mark Homecoming
Ashland A number of ac
tivities highlighted by clear,
warm weather, were held dur
ing the week end at Southern
Oregon college for its annual
homecoming.
Reigning over the festivi
ties was Queen Sharlene Fin
chum, Klamath Falls, a sopho
more at the college.
The homecoming events
started Friday .with a Theta
Delta Phi scholastic honorary
breakfast, followed by a noise
parade, variety show and bon
fire rally.
Saturday morning a parade
through downtown Ashland
included-floats, marching
bands, and new and old time
automobiles. Honored guests
included Mrs. Stephen G.
(Eve) Nye, Medf ord, state rep
resentative; Mrs. Delleen
Metzger, SOC alumni associa
tion president; Robert Mead,
student body president; Mrs.
Mabel W. Winston, dean of
women; Dr. Alvin Fellers, di
rector of student affairs; and
SOC President and Mrs. Elmo
N. Stevenson.
Theme for the week end
was "Destination Unlimited."
A luncheon Saturday was
held for present and past
members of Robes, women's
service organization, in the
Britt student center. Groups
viewed the building decora
tions until the 2 pan. foot
ball game, when SOC won
over Oregon College of Educa
tion, 20 to 7.
Half-time activities includ
ed the introduction of Queen
Sharlene and her court with
speeches by Dr. Stevenson and
other officials. The alumni at
tended a reception tea in,the
Britt center lounge following
the game.
At a business meeting fol
lowing the tea Mrs. Metzger
and Hugh Simpson, director
of alumni affairs, explained
methods of expanding the as
sociation in terms of more
services and functions for the
members. , . ;

tral Valley, shot himself to
death Sunday night, sheriffs
deputies said, after inviting
his wife to play Russian roul

Nelson's wife, Dixie Lee,
told officers her husband re
turned from hunting intoxi
cated Sunday afternoon.
During an argument with
his wife, officers said, Nelson
suddenly said, "let's play Rus
sian roulette," raised the .22
caliber pistol to his head and
pulled the trigger. '

Men Reported Hunting
On Airport Runway
George Elliott Mulligan,
Medf ord airport, notified city
police Sunday morning that
five men were hunting in the
north section of the runway.
One of the hunters, Dwain
Allen Richardson, route 4, box
387, Grants Pass,, was picked
up by police, who with Mulli
gan, explained the danger of
hunting and trespassing on
the airport runway.

both are from New Jersey.
The two met at Middlebury
College in Vermont, where
they had pledged to speak
only Russian while studying
the language. They fell in
love and became engaged.
True to their promise, they
spoke Russian only.
The couple decided to mar
ry at a Russian ceremony in
Moscow, where Dennis later
was to study international
law. The wedding came off
as scheduled - but wasn't
anything like what they ex
pected. '' ; '
Back home again, the new
Mrs. O'Connor, told about
their experience. "
Church Weddings Rare
"Dennis had to work so
hard with the American Em
bassy to arrange a church
wedding for us," c she said.
"Weddings in churches have
become rare in Russia."
Finally, a Polish priest was
allowed to conduct the cere
mony at St. Louis Roman
Catholic Church in Moscow.
"People crowded around
outside, the church as we got
married," Mrs. O'Connor,
said, ."There were a . lot of
elderly women in shawls who
seemed to remember, the old
time weddings, and who cried.
But the younger people just
seemed aghast, as though they
never had seen anything like
it." ' "
In deference to Soviet cus
tom, the couple was married
again 10 days later . in real
Russian style-with a', bureau
cratic, civil ceremony.
The heart of the ceremony
consisted of plunking- down
15 rubles, or $1.50, before a
plump woman office worker.
Then the couple signed a reg
ister and had their passports
stamped.
Either Name Acceptable .
The office worker asked
Mary Lou whether she want
ed tokeep her own name or
take.her husband's; since in
Russia the women can ar
range it either way. The
bride said she preferred to
be Mrs. O'Connor.
"Then is was all " over,"
said the bride. "I wouldn't
say there was much romance
involved."
The Russian press widely
played up the civil ceremony
-but completely ignored the
church wedding, she said.
"They were so anxious to
suppress all news of the
church marriage that I had
the impression someone was
outside the church shooing
people away, as we got mar
ried," she said.
