twins, Thursday were de
clared in satisfactory condi
tion at the University of Ore
gon Medical school hospital
fcere.
It was the first time the
e girls, born Siamese, had been
off the critical list since they
were separated in a five-hour
operation Oct. 6.
"Their conditions are now
satisfactory and the outlook
o is favorable," a hospital
source said,
o Both have been improving
steadily during the past week,
doctors said. Both have gained
weight and are taking four
ounces of formula every four
hours.

NOBEL WINNER Italian Poet Salvatore
Quasimodo, 58, has been awarded the 1959
Nozel Prize for Literature. The award was
announced Thursday by the Swedish Acad
emy of Literature. Quasimodo, the first
Italian in 25 years to win the coveted $42,
610 literature prize, teaches Italian litera
ture at Milan's musical conservatory.

being called to Yuba City by
the' death of Sage's mother,
Mrs. Melinda Shimp, 71, who
was killed in an automobile
accident on Saturday, Oct. 10.
She was born at Scott Bar
and has made her home in
Auburn for the past several
years. She was a member of
the Auburn Happiness club
and the Bethel Assembly of
God church.
Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. W. E. Henry,
and Mrs. W. J. Ward, both of
Alaska, one son, David A.
Sage of Hilts; one brother,
Ernest Schuler of Siskiyou
county and 10 grandchildren
and, 10 great grandchildren.
Burial was in the Auburn
District cemetery Thursday,
Oct. 15.

been remodeling several

several months and the ten

outside giving the street, "a

olutions were strongly word
ed in favor of providing ade
quately for the seriously ne
glected superior , students at
all levels elementary, sec
ondary, and higher education
- in a continuous and integra
ted program.
Urgent recommendations to
all member institutions in re
gard to the handling of super
ior students called for their
earliest 'possible identification
and counseling; a careful an
alysis of each based upon the
differences which exist among
such students; and broaden
ing of curricular offerings to
include special honors pro
grams, advanced placement,
and independent study con
sistent with the nature and
goals of each institution.
