Baton Rougp La. -(UPD I
was one of the coaches who
disregarded the idea of the
rules committee of widening
the goal posts. When the rule
was made, I felt that the best
comment was: "It's great for
goal post manufacturers."
How wrong can you be. I
haven't had a chance to study
the compilation of national
statistics. But here at LSU we
have had a most pleasant and
surprising experience.
Our fine sophomore right
halfback on the "go" team
(our offensive starters) has
booted four field goals in four
attempts. That is surprising
when you realize that up until
a few days before the Rice
game, we had not decided
who would ' attempt field
goals.
Pick Wendell Harris
Wendel' Harris was one of
three we had to decide from.
We chose Harris because he
had looked the most consis
tent that last week.
In college, the kick is mea
sured from the line of scrim
mage to the cross bar, and
as you know, the cross bar is
10 yards past the goal line.
HarrL.' field goals have
Goal Posts
eld Kicks
been for 33 yards versus
Rice, 29 versus TCU, 26
against Baylor and 39 long
yards against Kentucky.
That is certainly fine kick
ing, especially for a young
sophomore. There is no ques
tion but that the widening of
the goal posts made at least
one of these four kicks pos
sible. The kicking game is one of
the three phases of football
that we at LSU attempt to
stress. The other two phases
are defense and offense. Gen
eral Bob Neyland, who be
came famous as the coach of
the Tennessee Vols, has al
ways been one of the leading
exponents of the kicking
game.
Us Neyland's Tactics
Men who are in the coach
ing ranks who played, under
"The General" have used his
tactics to great advantage.
Bobby Dodd, Phil Dickens,
and the present Tennessee
coach, Bowden Wyatt, , are
prime examples.
The kicking game is one
phase of the game of football
where a miscue can put you
out of the game. A mis
handled punt can lead to a
score. In the "clutch games,"
one score is often the -jdiff er-ence.

Early Wynn
Comeback
By FRED DOWN
New. York-UPD-Early Wynn,
a 39-year-old pitcher who be
lieves in growing old grace
fully, was hailed for making
the American league come
back of the year today by the
United Press International.
Wynn previously was
named to the UPI's American
league All-Star team and also
was picked as the AL's pitch
er of the year.
A 22-game winner for the
Chicago White Sox, Wynn
beat out Tito Francona of the
Cleveland Indians by one
vote, 7-6, in the comeback-of-year
balloting. Eddie Yost,
Hoyt Wilhelm, Gene Wood
ling, Bobby Shantz, Bill
Turtle and Ted Kluszewski
also were mentioned.
Appeared On Downgrade
Only a year ago, Wynn
definitely seemed on the
downgrade as a top-notch
pitcher. He had compiled a 14
17 record in 1957 and a 14-16
slate in 1958 with earned run
averages over four in both
seasons.
But Wynn's answer to his
critics was a splendid season
in which he worked 256 in
nings, had a 22-10 won-lost
record, struck out 179 batters
and had a 3.13 earned run
average. He pitched five shut
outs and 14 complete games.
The big year also put Wynn
within reach of the exclusive
300-victory club. With 271
triumphs, he is leading win
ner among active major
league pitchers and the first
one in years to have a real
shot at the 300-mark.
Wynn was acquired from
the Indians Dec. 4, 1957 in a
deal that sent Minnie Minoso
to Cleveland. The 6-foot, 200
pound native of Hartford,
Ala., broke into the majors
with the Washington Senators
in 1941.
