ice) - The dates for the first
one -inch snow fall in 164
cities in the United States
have been calculated by a
U.S. Weather Bureau meteor
ologist here.
Aimougn ine zirst snows
have already occurred in Alas
ka and some western areas,
$uch as Colorado, the table
should still prove valuable to
snow tire and snow-removal
equipment manufacturers, as
well as those responsible for
removing snow from streets
and highways.
. The list shows , the first
days in fall or winter on
which on inch or ;more of
snowfall is likely to occur,
and the chances of this oc
currence. It was prepared by
H. C. S. Thorn of the Weather
Bureau's office of climatology
here.

ability for scattered cities are
Medford, Ore. - average of
one in 20 years before Nov
26; one in ten before Dec. 7,
and one in three before Dec
31. Occurs 67 out of every
100 years.
Seattle, Wash. - average of
one in 20 years before Nov.
20; one in ten before Dec. 2,
and one in three before Dec.
27- Occurs 72 out of 100
years.
El Paso, Tex. - average of
one in 20 years before Nov.
29; one in ten before Dec. 11,
and one in three before Jan.
8. Occurs 55 out of 100 years.
Washington, D-C. - average
of one in 20 years before Nov.
5; one in ten before Nov. 15;
one in three before Dec- 7,
and nine out of ten before
Jan. 28- Occurs every year.
Birmingham, Ala. on the
average of one in 20 years the
first one-inch snowfall comes
before Dec.- 14; once in ten
years before Dec. 31, and once
in three years before Feb. 15.
However, a one-inch snowfall
occurs only four years out' of
every ten.
Fort Worth, Texas - aver
age of one in 20 years before
Dec. 9; one in ten before Dec.
20, and one in three before
Jan. 16. i Occurs 55 out , of
every 100 years.
Boston average of one in
20 years before Nov. 14; one
in ten before Nov. 21; one in
three before Dec. 5, and nine

the Appalachian Mountains
are predicted for the next 30
days:
: The only exception is near
normal thermometer readings
1 along the Gulf Coast, accord
ing to the Weather Bureau's
30-day outlook for the period
from mid-October to mid-No
vember. In the Upper and
Middle Mississippi Valley and
adjacent states, temperatures
are expected to average much
below their normals.
Above normal averages are
predicted for central and
southern West Coast states.
Near normal temperatures
are forecast for much of the
Inter-Mountain ., Plateau, and
also for areas east of the Ap
palachians. Precipitation, in the form
of either snow or fain at this
time of year, is expected to
exceed normal along the Gulf
Coast and east of the Appala
chians, as well as in the areas
just east of the Continental
Divide. Subnormal amounts
are anticipated west of the
Divide and also in the middle
Mississippi Valley. In unspe
cified areas, about normal
precipitation is indicated.
