A Tribute to . . .
Uncle Sam!
With ths world's brow full of worry wrinkles
and all of us praying for a workable peace, the
beloved old "Uncle" who symbolizes our nation
becomes the most important "relative" we can
have! So let's pause now and then, in our busy
preoccupations and silently thank God for the
strength of our Government. Stephen Decatur
said "right or wrong, this is my country". And
the spirit of his loyalty lives on today as never
before. It may be that our statesmen are not
always far visioned, but their sincerity is never
questioned nor their motives impugned. United
we stand, the United States of America . . . the
Land over which Uncle Sam is continuously
watchful!

Early planning for college . that . the
is a "must." S. T.. Brannock,
contact representative, VA
Domiciliary, Camp W h i t e,
said Saturday. Parents and
guardians of youngsters who,
in another few years, will be
eligible for higher education
under the War Orphans Edu
cation program should make
plans in advance of date the
orphan must enterC
The young people, all be
tween 12 and 18,. are ' those
whose parent died of a serv
ice-connected disability in
curred during the Spanish-
American War, World War I,
World Was II, Or the Korean
conflict. The boys and girls
either are just beginning or
are in high school.
Similar Notice
From now on, similar ad
Vance notice will go to the
parents and guardians of all
potentially eligible youngsters
who reach their 13th birthday,
Brannock said.
VA letters to parents and
guardians noted that although
the War Orphans program
generally begins at age 18,
the time to start thinking
about college is during the
early years of high school.
Therefore, the letters sug
gested, the high school course
should be planned ;"so that
it will provide an adequate
foundation for a program, of
education which may be pur
sued later." The letters added

principal will undoubtedly as
sist in planning this course.!'
Discuss Plans . ....... .
Parents and guardians are
invited to talk over their
children's high school plans
with VA counselors, ; if they
wish. However, actual formal
VA counseling will not begin
until the boy or girl nears the
end of high school.
Brannock said the reason
the VA sent out the letters
was to enable War Orphans
to make the most advanta
geous use of their educational
benefits when the time comes.
It is becoming more and more
difficult to enter college on
the spur of the moment, Bran
nock pointed out; preparation
must begin long before.
Under the War Orphans Ed
ucation program, VA pays an
allowance of up to $110 a
month for each month of a
student's education, to a max
imum of 36 months. Young
people, generally between 18
and 23, may enroll in college
or in vocational courses once
they have passed the age of
compulsory school attendance.
