Hatfield Lauds Work
Of Robert Sawyer

Oregon Gov. Mark Hatfield
Wednesday made the follow
ing comment on the death of
Robert W. Sawyer, Bend,
former publisher of the Bend
Bulletin and prominent - in
conservation and reclamation
circles for more than half a
century.
"Judge Sawyer in many,
many ways contributed much
to his state and I am most
personally aware of the
splendid way in which he
provided for the century de
velopment of the Capitol
Mall.
"His foresight and adher
ence to principles in this pro
ject typified his activities in
other fields. He was a public
servant whose value cannot
be measured."
Ex. Gov. Charles Sprague,
publisher of the Salem
Statesman, said "Oregon has
lost one of its ablest citizens,
one of the most constructive
leaders in this century."
Loss of Close Friend
Sprague said he also felt
the loss of a "close' personal
friend" with the passing of
Sawyer.
The Eugene Register-Guard
said "in the last months of
his life Judge Robert W. Saw
yer cleaned out the files he
had accumulated over half a
century of public life. Some
material went into the waste
basket. The most valuable
went to the University of
Oregon library. Martin
Schmitt, curator of the Uni
versity's Oregon collection,
said the evening after Judge
Sawyer's death 'his waste
basket was more valuable
than most people's libraries."
The newspaper called Saw
yer botn "a tninKer ana a
doer" and said "he had a fin
ger in most of the important
pies of his adopted state. It
added "only recently it has
been revealed that if Thomas
E. Dewey had been elected
president Judge Sawyer
would have been secretary of
interior."
"Brother editors around the
state cherished terse notes in
which 'R.W.S.' informed them
they had used a word improp
erly or had overlooked a key
fact."

Electrical Engineers here by
G. E. Guy and P. W. Schirmer
of the General Electric Com
pany, Philadelphia.
The April system keeps an
automatic typewritten code
record of telemetering read
ings of demand, load, flow or
other desired quantities at re
mote stations.
By making it possible to
include a typewritten record
of all operations performed or
indicated over the supervisory
system, such as the closing or
breaking of circuit breakers,
the system relieves the opera
tor from keeping the neces
sary detailed records that can
interfere with performance of
his more important duties.
Now that he is dead at 7q
well-wishers may consider a
monument of some sort to his
memory. Judge Sawyer an
ticipated them. The city of
Bend and to some extent all
of Oregon will be his monu
ment. '
Oregonian's Comment
The Oregonian said "Judge
Sawyer had strong convic
tions on many subjects and
expressed them strongly. Un
like some editors he was will
ing to pitch in and give free
ly of his own time and efforts
to help achieve the things his
newspaper advocated."
It added, "Judge Sawyer
was a clear thinker who ex
pressed himself in the same
fashion. He believed plain
facts were quite palatable
served up without earnish.
His Bend Bulletin was an in
fluential newspaper and he
himself was an effective par
ticipant in struggles to
achieve honest and efficient
government, resource conser
vation and sound economic
growth because of his talent
for accuracy and clarity in
his writing and speech."
New Soil Heat
Treatment Helps
Control Diseases
Los Angeles (Science Serv-
ice)-Aerated steam at about
140 degrees Fahrenheit can
be used to kill plant disease
organisms in the soil, but
does not destroy harmless
organisms.
This new treatment, which
has proved effective in ex
perimental disease control of
field-grown nursery plants.
was developed by Dr. Ken
neth F. Baker, plant patholo-0
gist at the University of Cali
fornia here.
It is a part of a general
"public health"or disease pre
vention program designed for
the nursery industry.
Previous soil heat treat
ment involved a 212 degree0
temperature. This rendered
the soil completely sterile,
killing all organisms and leav
ing a "biological vacuum."
Reduces Reconiaminalion
The new method reduces re
contamination of the treated
soil by disease organisms,
which usually occurs in the
field from the air or nearby
untreated soil.
Since competition among
soil organisms for available
nutritional resources is so
great, the re-invading disease
organisms have a more diffi
cult time in the soil in which
moderate heat treatment has
permitted competing non-disease
organisms to survive.
Antibiotics produced in the
soil by the "good" organisms
further limit those which
cause disease.
Disease organisms re-establish
themselves rapidly in
soil treated by the old sterile
method. Thus the disease may
again attack plants, some-,
times more severely than be
fore. 1
