move, has embarked on a gi
gantic oil life-line project
which will tie the satellites
closer to Moscow and advance
its strategic supply lines
deeper into the heart of Eu
rope. .
The Soviet, in close cooper
ation with its East European
satellites, is building a 2,500
mile , pipeline which will
carry oil from the Urals to
Poland, East Germany, Hun
gary and Czechoslovakia.
At the same time Moscow
is working on another life
life which is to bring Soviet
oil to the shores of the Bal
tic for the needs of the Scan
dinavian nations as well as
those of Russia's strategic Bal
tic fleet.
The two moves shrewdly
combine long term strategic
arjd political considerations
of the highest order.
The two projects also are of
considerable importance eco
nomically since they will pro
vide Russia with a long-term
outlet for her growing' oil
surpluses.
Plans for the intra-bloc
pipeline were laid some time
back and worked out through
COMECON, the Communist
bloc's committee for mutual
oconomic aidy which organ
izes economic cooperation

The project, broadly, pro
vides for a pipeline to origi
nate at Kuibyshev and run

lorussia to Poland at East
Germany. Another branch
would go to Czechoslovakia
and Hungary.

returning to normal activity
after having their usual pat
terns upset by last August's
severe earthquake.
There were "no outstand
ing changes," such as Old
Faithful no longer being faith
ful, scientists at the National
Park Service told Science
Service. Reports from park
naturalists indicate that some
hot springs cooled off .and
some cool "springs became
hot ones.
The situation is one where
such a large earthquake, in
which some 20 persons lost
their lives and a new lake
was formed, causes certain
shifts in tj earth's crust. The
noticeable effects of these
shifts, such as seen in differ
ent geyser schedules and
changes in temperatures of
springs, are slowly dying out.
Whether all pf the geysers
will i subside to their pre
earthquake activity level and
schedule is not yet known.

Juvenile Court has issued a
warrant for a 15-year-old
Woodburn girl who has re
fused to go to school since
last year.
The warrant was issued for
Sharyn Schneider who until
recently has been helping her
parents run a grocery store
at Woodburn.
Judge Joseph Felton said
Sharyn had failed twice to
show up for hearings on her
school ' attendance. Her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence

World War II has seen a tre
mendous increase in graduate
medical training programs for
physicians. A report by the
American Medical Association
here shows that more than
37,000 physicians took gradu
ate training in 1958-59. The
marked expansion is attrib
uted to the desire of young
physicians to secure specialty
training after being d i s
charged from military service.
The report also indicated a 50
per cent rise in available in
ternships and a 500 per cent
increase in residencies from
1941 to 1958.
Americans now drink 100
million, or 34 per cent, more
cups of coffee a day than they
did 10 years ago, according to
the Pan-American Coffee Bu
reau, but they're only using
10 per cent more pounds of
coffee.
