night gave notice that they
are going to be tough to de
throne as the defending North
west conference champions
this year as they rolled to a
20-6 win over Lewis and
Clark in Salem.
Freshman quarterback Tom

ing pass to end Terry Kent
on the first play from scrim
mage in the contest and then
Lee kicked a bare - footed
placement to give Willamette
a 7-0 lead with only 15 sec
onds gone in the game.
Lee added a second-period
scoring toss of 24 yards to
Doug Chan. Letterman Kevin
Nagel paced 'the Bearcat
ground attack with 117 yards
in 20 carries. He scored the
final Willamette touchdown
on a 2-yard jaunt.
Lewi and Clark didn't get
into the contest until the final
period when Royce McDaniel
sparked a 25-yard drive.
A tremendous fourth-quart
er performance by quarter
back Charlie Alvaro pulled
College of Idaho into a 14-14
tie with Linfield at Caldwell,
Idaho.
Linfield took a 14-7 lead
in the third period on the
passing of Bill Parrish. Par
rish threw scoring passes of
14 and 19 yards. Alvaro cap
ped a 93-yard drive by sneak
ing over from the one with
only 19 seconds left. He then
kicked the extra point.
.Tun Smith led Whitman to
an easy 26-6 non-conference
win over Oregon College at
Walla Walla. Smith scored on
a one-yard plunge and snag
ged a 15-yard pass for his
other score. The lone OCE
score was a 24-yard dash with
a recovered fumble by War
ren Slayton in the second
quarter.

before more than 70,000 fans.
Hill averaged 89.05 miles
an hour in his 3-liter Ferrari
during the 203.05-mile race to
set a new record. Chuck Daigh
averaged 88 miles an hour in
the first annual event last

Portland - Mud and rain
prevailed but so did Southern
Oregon college as it won its
opening Oregon Collegiate
conference football game 12-7
over the winless Portland
State college Vikings on the
Roosevelt high school field
Saturday night.
Not only did the Red Raid
ers nab their first victory of
the year but they kept intact
their record of never losing
to Portland State.
In the driving rain and in
the ever present mud between
the 30 yard lines, the Raiders
had to come from a 7-6 deficit
at halftime with a score in
the middle of the third quar
ter for the winning edge.
Coach All Akins had noth
ing but praise for his charges
after the game and said that
if ever a team effort won a
ball game ' this was one of
those contests.
Worked Hard
Akin's Raiders had to work
hand in hand for every yard
they gained for their two tal
lies while Portland State gain
ed its lone touchdown when
it took over the ball on the
SOC 11 yard line after a
ball Raider center snap on
fourth down. :
Allen Barnes led the patch
ed up backfield to the first
score for the men of SOC in
the second quarter when he
picked up a first down on the
Viking five-yard line. The fol
lowing play proved made to
order for the 200-pound full
back and he drove into the
end zone. '
The tally capped a 63-yard
drive that took 10 plays and
was sparked by a 31-yard gain
through the air when Jack
Brown' connected on one of
his two completions of the
evening. Gordy Carrigan took
the look-in pass and danced a
jig cross to pick up a first
down on the Viking 18 yard
line.

A bit later, Tony Brauner
could not reach a high pass
from center as he stood deep
to put for the Raiders and he
chased the live ball all the
way back to the 11-yard line
before he fell on the slippery
pigskin.
From there Dennis Parra of
USC skirted the right end for
the touchdown in one play
and Mac Wiebe's conversion
was good to give Foruana
State its slight 7-6 lead. For
the Viks, it was the first time
they had held the lead this
year in their four losses and
only the second time they had
scored.
Following the first series of
downs after the second half
kickoff, the Raiders were
forced, to punt but instead
they passed and, the ball went
incomplete. ;r-V'

The Raider line held and
threw the Vikings for two
losses before they were forced
to punt and ball went only 12
yards, giving the men of SOC
a first and 10 on their own
47-yard line. .

yards and then slanted to the
right on the second play to.
break into the open on the
40-yard line and threw his
final tackier in the mud be
hind him to race 51 yards for
the winning six points.
Two years ago these same
two teams had played in Port
land on a similar evening
with the weather conditions
much the same. Only that
evening the final score ..had
the Raiders with an even
smaller edge, 7-6, which put
them' on their way to the
OCC crown. . . .

Barnes, McKinnis, and Bud
Kastner were congratulated
for the job they did in the
absence of the two regular
lialfbacks, Punk Biddington
and Eldon Francis who are
sidelined with injured legs.
Tony Brauner, the Raider
kicker of the evening, was a
happy ball player and his own
strategy paid off in successful
dividends. With the mud and
wet hampering good ball
handling, Brauner took to
cradling the snap back and
then . taking the ball in his
hands to kick. It took more
time this way but Brauner
revealed , a coolness that en
abled him. to get the ball
away every time he got his
hands on it.
Averaged 30.3
In the slippery mud, the
Medford sophomore averaged
30.3 yards per boot, an ac
complishment acclaimed b y
all the coaches.
The Raiders did threaten on
one other occasion late in the
fourth quarter when they
drove down to the Viking 16
but a fourth down pass , was
broken up in the end zone.
This week the Raiders play
their first 1959 game on Ful
ler field in Ashland. They will
be host to Oregon Tech Satur
day night 8 p.m.
