Teaching Urged

officials would like to see
earlier foreign language lit
struction for American young
sters, says the magazine, "Na
tion's Schools."
. Seven of every ten adminis
trators queried advocated
teaching a second language on
elementary s c h o o 1 level,
though most felt it should be
optional throughout both ele
mentary and secondary
schools.
A majority thought the
courses should start in the
fourth grade, and 98 per cent
gave their vote to two to four
years of language study in
high school.
One official, the magazine
said, voted for progress to
ward a universal language
"that will have some benefit
worldwide.
"One foreign language is no
good," he said, "if when you
travel 200 miles, you find
yourself in another country."
Preferred languages were
Spanish (34 per cent) and
French (22 ger cent.)
STOCKPILE REDUCED
Washington (UPD - Some of
the items in the government's
.1 billion stockpile of stra
tegic materials recently de
clared unessential and to be
disposed of are: 18 million
carats of saphires and rubies,
12 milgon ounces of quinine,
51,000 pounds of poppy seeds
and nearly 2 million pounds
of hog bristles.

cases made of aluminum have
upset an earlier notion that
aluminum is "too weak" to
contain the riot of forces in
a solid-propellant rocket mo
tor. The year-long tests, con
ducted by the Aluminum
Company of America jointly
with a major propellant man
ufacturer, showed that alum
inum is actually " stronger
than steel on a weight basis.
In addition, aluminum prov
ed to have a "volumetric ex
pansion" of five per cent,
meaning that under severe
stresses an aluminum engine
case could "give" five per
cent without exploding.
Excellent Indication
"This is an excellent in
dication of the reliability of
aluminum case s," W. C.
Woodward, manager of air
craft and missile sales said.
"Testing has been limited but
highly successful, and we feel
certain that aluminum cases
soon will be classed as pro
duction items."
One such case, 12 inches in
diameter and 45 inches long,
now is on display at the So
ciety of Automotive Engineers
National Aeronautic meeting

Aluminum already is used
to line the fuel tanks of some
rocket motors, chiefly those
of liquid-fueled rockets such
as the Titan, Jupiter and
Thor. In liquid-fueled rockets,
the fuel burn-rate can be con
trolled and the nozzle ab
sorbs most of the stresses of
combustion.
In contrast, solid fuel is
packed into a container which
must be strong enough to
handle all forces generated
as the fuel burns freely with
in it.
Economic Promise
The new findings, believed
to hold economic promise,
may lead to use, of aluminum
in big rocket motors now un
der development. Some of
these are expected to demand
metal , strengths higher than
those now commercially avail
able in steels.
Metallurgists long have
known the tensile strengths
of sheet aluminum, but it was
found that classical figures
"did not exactly apply" to
aluminum after it was fab-i
ricated into rocket - engine
cases. The changes ' in the
metal's performance were
linked with more-complex j
patterns of circumferential j
and longitudial stresses, as
opposed to a simple tensile
stress.
PER CAPITA INCOME RISE
New, York (UPD - Per capita
income in the United States
rose to $2,057 last year from
$1,491 in 1950, the National
Industrial Conference Board
reported. Connecticut led the
nation with a per capita in
come of $2,817. New Mexico
showed the sharpest jump be
tween 1950 and 1958 - about
58 per cent to $1,838.
