both of them look upon us as
their substitute children.
They have none of their own.
I was very warm and friend
ly with both of them, but now
I see it was a mistake.
The man, Warren, recently
started getting fresh with me.
He made all sorts of shocking
proposals. I just couldn't be
lieve that it wa? happening
and I ran out of the room.
' When I told my husband, he
.was ready to murder him. He
says he'll have nothing fur
ther to do with them. But this
will break his wife's heart.
. I wonder if I made a mistake
in telling my husband.

my bare hands. How could a
middle-aged man do a thing
; like that and with my wife,
no less. He doesn't even have
the excuse of having been
drunk.
I don t want to ever see
Warren again. Of course, I
feel sorry, for .his wife, Di-
anne. I can't see what we can
do except tell her the reason
we aren't seeing them. She'll
be upset, but I0just hate to
have her think I don't care
about her.
At one time I thought this
man was the salt of the earth.
I felt closer to him than my
own father and I wanted to
be like him when I grew up.
He certainly was very good
to me when I was a boy and
I don't want to be ungrateful,
but what else can I do?
Th Council: The first'thing
both Betty and Joe can do is
cool off a bit. We don't think
Betty was necessarily wrong
in telling her husband, but
she was wgrong in telling it to
him the way she evidently
did.
Probably Betty was fright

ened at the unexpected turn
of events, but she should have
given herself a little time to
absorb the situation. A little
more thought would have
made her recognize that this
man was somewhat unbal
anced emotionally at the mo
ment. Certainly she must
avoid him for a time, but she
didn't have to fly to her hus
band and ring in a fire alarm
- unless she was in actual
physical jeopardy. ,
Joe needs to simmer down
and recognize that Warren
may still be "the salt of the
earth" in man7 ways. He is
still the man who protected
a homeless boy.
An incident like this is not
isolated, however. There must
be other signs that Warren is
upset emotionally. Probably
he has been indulging in other
incidents and in fantasies of
this nature. His wife -must be
more or ?ess aware of this.
If the wife is told the full
story she may feel forced to
defend her husband and this
would cause an irreparable
break in this relationship. Or
the wife may feel so ashamed
that she'll want such a break.
We think the best policy in
this instance ma; be to avoid
contacts with this couple, but
to remember them with gifts,
cards and calls on special
occasions. It is very likely
that the wife will surmise the
reason for the rift.
Eventually Warren may re
gain command of himself and
may indicate it in some way,
perhaps in, a direct apology to
Betty or . by some indirect
sign. Betty and Joe should
consider the present break
partial and temporary.

Legend of Bad Luck
For Hope Diamond
Owners Persists
Washington - !DPD - Legend
has it that the Hope diamond
is strictly bad luck-for who
ever owns it. Through the
years tragedy has followed in
the path of the fabulous stone.
The first owner of the 44-and-a-half
carat diamond - a
French adventurer - is believ
ed to have been killed by a
pack of dogs.
Next came a princess who
was beaten to death by a
I French mob.
Louis XVI and Marie An
toinette possessed the Hope,
and. they expired on the guil
lotine. Another French family came
by the diamond. They. were
wiped out in a fall over a cliff.
It looked as if the spell was
broken when Henry Thomas
Hope got the stone. Hope died
a normal death. But his
grandson died penniless, and
his wife ended up scrubbing
floors for a living.
Son Killed
The diamond's first Ameri
can owner Washington host
ess Evalyn Walsh McClean -survived
the Hope. But her
son was killed in an auto
crash, her husband died' in a
mental institution, and her
daughter from an overdose of
sleeping pills.
Gem dealer Harry Winston
purchased the Hope in 1949
and gave it to the Smithson
ian Institute last year. Win
ston apparently beat the le
gendary bad luck that shad
ows the diamond, but then
came James G. Todd.
When Winston mailed the
stone to Washington from
New York, it was postman

Mother Rescues

Portland-UPD - A Portland
mother grabbed her baby
from a bed, and herded two
older sons out of their Home

their living room collapsed in
flames here Tuesday.
Mrs. Robert Russell told of
ficers that one of the boys
ran in and told her the ceil
ing was smoking. Her hair
was singed as he dashed from
the house with the children.
Firemen said the blaze,
which . caused some $7,500
damage, was caused by defec
tive wiring in the attic.
Pay in Institution
Uo To Control Board
Salem-dJPD-The State Board
of Control is required by law
to decide if and how much
a person in a state institu
tion must pay for his own
care, Attorney General Rob
ert Y. Thornton reaffirmed
Tuesday. .
The courts used to decide,
hut under a 1959 law. the
board now may decide. Its
decision will be based on the
ability of the patient or his
relatives to pay. If the board
cannot decide, it may resort
to the courts, Thornton said.
Drain Man Crushed

Drain-dlPD - Dean Franklin
Russum, 43, Drain, was fa
tally crushed late Monday in
an industrial accident near
here. Authorities said he was
pinned between heavy con
struction machinery at a new
mill site.
He was employed by Smith
River Logging company.
Eleanor Rathbone, the so
cial reformer who died in
1946, was the first woman
elected .by acclamation to
Britain's Parliament in 1929.
Todd who delivered it to the
Smithsonian.
Todd claims he isn't super
stitious and never will be. But
since he delivered the Hope
last November, here's what's
happened to him.
-His leg was crushed by a
truck;
-His wife, mother of four,
died from a heart attack while
Todd was recovering;
Thrown From Car
He was thrown from his
car in an accident, suffering a
head wound;
-Todd's dog strangled him
self when he plunged through
a basement window while
leashed to a tree;
-Four rooms in Todd's su
burban Maryland home were
gutted by fire.
But the postman firmly de
nies the diamond had any
thing to do with it. "I don't
believe any of that stuff," he
says.
In fact, Todd looks at it this
way: "Perhaps I'm actually
having good luck. Thank God
all four children were out
side instead of inside when
the fire hit."
Since the government is
now the keeper of the Hope
diamond, Todd has this word
of warning: "If the hex is
supposed to affect the owners,
then the American public
should be having a run of bad
luck." ,

tive secretary of the Oregon
AFL-CIO.
.He., defeated Jess Bell,
Amalgamated Clothing Work
ers union official, by a margin
of 15,761 votes. Marr received
22,697 votes to Bell's 6,936.
Marr had held the post of
Oregon AFL-CIO secretary
since the organization was
founded in 1956.
Bell's major backing came
from former CIO unions, par
ticularly the Woodworkers
and Steelworkers. Bell was
first vice president of the
Oregon AFL-CIO and had
been president of the state
wide CIO until the merger in
1956.

Actually the Queen is an
egg laying machine, turning
out bee eggs on a production
line basis and at an unbeliev

many as 3,000 eggs in a 24
hour period. That's 125 eggs
an hour, or about two every
minute. She can keep this up
for about five years, thereby
producing in her lifetime
