The pair left for their ad
venture last April aboard the
17-foot, ogtboard Searcher,
powered ty twin 35-horse-power
engines, from Newport
harbor. After a quick stop in
San Dieo,' the Searcher was
on its wy again, headed for
Ensenada.

Wind Kicked Up
The first real trouble came
as .the. adventurers put out to
sea after dark from Magdea-
lena .bay en route to La Paz.
The wind-suddenly kicked up
and huge waves tossed the
small boat around like a
toothpick.
Farney and Foglino rode
the crests of the giant waves
and then in igller-coaster
fashion came sliding down at
speeds of up to 30 knots.
Then one of the engines
conked out. The little craft
began to veer off its course.
Farney managed to repair
the engine in a few minutes,
but the other one then went
out and it had to be put back
& shape in a hurry. (

pulled into Cabp , San Lucas

One of their probelms, tha
voyagers reported, was find
ing fuel for their craft. They
used a total of 1,400 gallons
of gas and 15 case of oil. Far
ney and Foglino found they
uld usually purchase small
amounts at a time after a
friendly conversation, several
cigarettes and a candy bar.
Farney refers to his trip
rather nonchalantly, as if it
were nothing much more than
a Sunday afternoon cruise.
"Sure it was a risk," he
says. Jtsur we maae up our
minds that we wanted to take
that risk and e safely com
pleted our journey."

Natural oxidation of the sul-
furitic material associated
with mining is the initial re
action responsible for this
acidity, S. A. Braley of the
Aellon Institute, Pittsburgh,
told the Society of Mining En
gineers of the' American In
stitute of Mining, Metallurgi
cal and Petroleum Engineers

Secondary reactions of the
initially formed acid and acid
salts, with the earth and rock,
ha said, can produce mine dis
charges . varying from high
acid content to high alfeali.
Because of the many factors
involved, Braley said,, there is
no known universal, economi
cal or practical method for the
prevention of acid formation
or for treatment after ferma
tian. However, there are "en
gineering procedures that may
be used in specific cases to
prevent or decrease the acid
properties of m i n dis
charges." .

other human ills, has been de
veloped by CIBA Pharmaceu

Added to the chickens' feed
in very low concentrations it
is said to help the chicken
withstand stress.
Treated chickens had a
higher survival rate and pro
duced more and higher quali
ty eggs than did hens on a
standard diet. They also are
aot bothered as much by
crowding, social maladjust
ment, temperature extremes
and disease.
CIBA researchers claim the
product is also economic be
cause feed waste is reduced;
The sedate treated chickens
scratch less food out of the
feeder and onto the ground.
