Peiping (DPD - I watched
the leaders of world Commu
nism gathered in a massed ar
ray today 300-strong on the
stage of Peking's vast new
Hall of Congress.
They have come from all
over the world, leaders of
government, men in exile,
men who do not own the label
of Communist but men who
jointly make up the power
of Communism throughout
the world.
They have come to the
10th anniversary of the Chi
nese Communists' defeat of
Chiang Kai-Shek as to a
shrine where they can declare
their worldwide solidarity
and plan for the future.
Leaders Stand Out
Party leader Mao Tse-tung
and Premier Chou En-lai
stood out in their soft-grey tu
nic uniforms. Mikhail Suslov,
Khrushchev's lean thinking
machine and chief representa
tive here, was in the place of
honor. So was Ho Chi Minn,
once a scullery boy in Lon
don, now boss of Viet Mi:ih.
The president of Hungary,
the president of Poland, the
president of Bulgaria, they
were all sitting at their desks
on the vant stage. .
The Panchen Lama, in his
rich silken robes, sat imme
diately behind Choi En-lai.
They were gathered together
before an audience of 10,000
no, I'm mistaken, 10,000 peo
ple - sitting comfortably in
this incredible building.
. It is so huge it makes the
United Nations , building in
New York look like a village
meeting hall. It is modern and
yet; the eaves have a delicate
tip-tile to suggest a Chinese
pagoda. It has two soaring bal
conies, discreet lighting, and
is finished in light oak.
Red Star on Ceiling
And on the ceiling is a gi
gantic n by-red star. One af
ter another, delegates walked
to the rostrum to sing a cho
rus of praise for China and
Communism and express con
tempt for the way of life as
we know it in the West. :

great historic task, to combat

policy - in all its oppressive
forms and. to open up the road
to agrarian reform.

sented at a teacher workshop
for 50 teachers and staff mem
bers .of M e d f o r d public
schools.
The workshop started yes
terday, and will end tomor
row. Instructor is Mrs. Cali
fornia Winter, of Corte Ma
dera, Calif., art education con
sultant for Milton Bradley
company, school art materials
manufacturer of Springfield,
Mass.
Mrs. Winter, a member of a
pioneer California family who
helped settle Corte Madera, a
town in Marin county, re
ceived her education in Marin
county schools, and at San
Francisco State college, where
she majored in art education.
She was a classroom teach
er, elementary school princi
pal, housewife and has been
an art consultant for the past
10 years. She has presented
demonstrations and conducted
workshops for more than 50,
000 school educators during
regular sessions and. summer
sessions in schools, colleges,
and Universities of Arizona,
California, Colorado, Idaho,
Nevada, Oregon, Utah and
Washington.
The workshop is designed
to acquaint participants with
current art education phil
osophies and their application
to various art media, such as
crayons, water and poster
colors, finger paint, construc
tion paper and clay in de
veloping creative thinking in
children.
