33, is the world's first official
record holder for a solo flight
around the world in a single
engine plane.
Gluckmann established the
record flight of 29 days, six
hours, eight minutes and 52.2
seconds by landing here Sun
day. ......
No other person had made
the trip with official sanction,
although similar flights have
been completed. , Sanctioning
body in Gluckmann's case was
the Federation Aeronautique
Internationale, which keeps
all aviation records. Gluck

Jerry Giesler was reported
"resting comfortably" Satur
day after a heart attack.-
Giesler, . 72, was taken to
Mt Sinai hospital for the sec
ond time within three months
Friday after suffering the at
tack at his home.
Dr. Jack A. Sheinkopf said
the attack was "mild" and
that the famed Hollywood at
torney would probably be hos
pitalized for about two weeks
for. observation as well as
rest and treatment."
In July, . Giesler was hos
pitalized for two weeks for
what was described as a phys
ical checkup.
His. clients have included

Capt. ' Joseph B. Fallon,
head of Boston's homicide
squad, admitted Sunday night
that he was without a clue in
the slaying of pretty Lynn
Kauffman, 23, daughter of a
wealthy Chicago industrialist.
To Meet Detectives
Fallon was expected to trav
el to New York, today to con
fer with detectives who ques
tioned those aboard the Dutch
freighter SS Utrecht when it
docked in Brooklyn Saturday.
He may also requestion some
members of the crew himself,
according to a spokesman.
The badly beaten, half nude
body of the girl, described as
"the life of the ship," was
found Saturday in outer Bos
ton harbor. A medical exam
iner said it appeared she was
knocked unconscious and
thrown overboard to drown.
There was no evidence , of
rape.

Miss Kauffman was a re
search assistant to Prof. Stan
ley Spector of Washington
university in St. Louis, who
is an expert on Far East af
fairs. She was returning from
a year in Singapore along
with Spector's wife, three
young children and a Chinese
boy the couple hoped to adopt
The professor had returned
three weeks ago. .
' They Spectors came here
Sunday to identify the body
of the girl and to talk with
police.

Local Man Named Operations Officer Choke Witnesses

Maj.'- Curtis E. Hopkins, of
Medford, was named opera
tions officer recently for the
906th air refueling squadron
of the Strategic Air Com
mand, stationed at Minot Air
Force base, N.D.
The unit commanded by Lt.
Col. Robert D. Cummings will
fly the KC-135 aerial tankers
expected at the base soon.
Activated, last June with five
officers and one airman, the
906th air refueling squadron
now has approximately-20 of
ficers and 10 airmen.
Major Hopkins is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Curtis L. Hop
kins, Old Military rd., Cen
tral Point.
A senior pilot, he was a
B52 aircraft commander in
the 28th Bomber Wing at Ells
worth Air Force base before
arriving at Minot. He is a vet
eran of 17 years in the Air
Force, with four years over
seas. The major was a bombar
dier - navigator for .the 97th
Bomber Group of the 15th Air
Force in Italy in 1944. He
also flew during the Korean
hostilities. He attended bom
bardier, school in 1943 , at
Deming N.M., and pilot train
ing at Randolph Air 'Force
base, Texas, in 1947.
Before entering the service,
Major Hopkins attended the
University of Montana, Mis
soula, Mont. He is married to
the former Betty Jane John
son, also of Medford, and the
couple have four children,
Cherron, 13, Curtis 9, Jan
nette, 4, and Steven, two
months. - ' '
Councilmen Get
Marine Corps Look

cilman from Vancouver,
Wash., took part in a Marine
Corps landing operation on
the Willamette river Sunday
but.it was all a mistake; They
weren't supposed to be that
close, i . ;

Washougal and P. L. Wilson
of Vancouver were aboard the
USS McGinty for decommis
sioning ceremonies.
Sailors, thinking the two
were newsmen, ushered them
down a ladder into the cap
tain's gig and they were sev
eral miles downstream before
they learned they were par
ticipating in the maneuver..
Wilson and Semke went
along because they thought it
was "part of the ceremony."
The Navy and the councilmen
said no harm was done.

Thursday as a pledge of Kap
pa Sigma fraternity.
Police said those to be sub
penaed included the fraternity
president, Dan Hayes; three
active members and three
pledges.. Officers also said
they expected to call 13 other
witnesses, including police of
ficers and ambulance attend
ant Nathan Ruben who said
Swanson's life might have
been saved had the boys told
what actually had happened
to Swanson.. ,
Swanson's death brought
demands for action from the
parents of the boy, cityr coun
ty and state officials. .
