Secret Microscope Flown To States
Houston, Tex. (DPD A new
electron microscope so pow
erful and so secret that it was
flown from West Germany
'with elaborate security pre
cautions is now in use at the
Baylor University College of
Medicine in Houston.
The high-powered instru
ment i magnify electroni
cally up to 160,000 times.
With photographic enlarge
ment, a magnification of up
to two million' is possible.
The new $28,000 instrument
iwill be used at Baylor in re
search and training studies of
the ' ultra-structure of both
plant and human cells.
- "No cell can escaparits pow
erful eye,'K Dr. J. C. Hampton
said. "It lends itself to experi
mental biology as well as use
in clinical investigation ' of
speciments taken at biopsy,
and can be used as a diagnos
tic tool." t ; ,
Unlike the conventional mi
croscope, the electron micro
scope utilizes an electrostatic

lens. In this particular model,
there are five such lenses.

Law Stacked Against
Man Who Ga ve U p
U.S. Citizenship
Washington -fflPD-' Nicholas
Petrulli, who renounced his
American citizenship in hopes
of becoming a Soviet national
but now regrets it, appeared
today to be a man without a
country.
State Department legal ex
perts called the case unprece
dented. They searched for
ways to help Petrulli out of
his dilemma but said the law
seemed stacked against the
Valley Stream, N. Y., man
who got carried away by what
he saw in Russia as a tourist.
'A Stupid Thing
Petrulli formally renounced
his U. S. citizenship last week
during a trip to Moscow.
Tuesday, he said he had done
"a stupid thing" and asked if
he could come back . to this
country.
The State Department was
waiting for the official docu
ments on what they called a
"freak" case. These papers, in
cluding Petrulli's renunciation
of his oath of allegiance to the
United States, were en route
to Washington from the em
bassy in Moscow. They were
expected to arrive Saturday.
One State Department offi
cial said "he's a man without
a country at the moment, but
very frankly we don't know
too much about the case. It's
squarely in the laps of the
legal people." . . , -
The legal experts said their
initial reading of the law in
dicated very little flexibility
that would permit them to dis
regard the action Petrulli al
ready had taken. .
The question turned on
whether the renunciation was
completed when Petrulli sign
ed it or becomes effective
when it is accepted by the
State Department in Washing
ton, i
One official said "the law
looked to me as if it's all over
for him at this stage." But he
quickly added . that there
might be other considerations
not immediately apparent.
Tests Predict
Future Suicides
Cincinnati, Ohio -(Science
Service) Personality tests
can be used to predict which
mental patients" will later at
tempt or succeed in killing
themselves. How to predict
suicide was described to the
American Psychological Asso
ciation here by two research
teams from Veterans hospitals
in Los Angles, Calif., Durham,
N. C, and Brockton, Mass.
Significant answers to the
standard "MMPI" personality
test were found to character
ize persons who later showed
various kinds of suicidal behavior,-
Drs. Norman L. :Far
berow and Edwin S.' Shneid
man of VA Center, Los An
geles, told the meeting.
The well known Rorschach
ink blot test can be used to
spot' the person who "may
wind up a suicide, Drs, Paul
G. Daston of ' VA Hospital,
Durham, N. C., and George A.
Sakheim ' of VA Hospital,
Brockton, M a s s., reported.
One way of scoring the test
classified correctly 83 per cent
of non - suicidal mental pa
tients, 72 per cent 'of those
who la,ter tried to kill them
selves and 82 per . cent of
those who were actually sue
cessful suicides. - ; .
