Neuberger Plans
Addition To Bill

ment by Sen. Richard L. Neu
berger (D-Ore.) that he was
considering an addition to his
bill for an Oregon Dunes Na
tional Seashore park brought
reaction here today.
Neuberger said he was con
sidering an amendment which
would allow residential prop
erty owners to ' retain all
rights to their homes.
John M. Hayes, chairman of
the Western Lane Taxpayers
association which opposes the
proposed 25,000-acre park,
said: "We are pleased that
Senator Neuberger. has recog
nized that there are private
homes and lands around them
that should be protected. We
are sure that what appeared
fo be an unjust attitude was
his unwillingness to make
concessions until he became
more familiar with local problems."
A Senate interior subcom

chairman, is scheduled to hold
hearings on the proposal in
Eugene andi Reedsport next

Resume Talks

resumed t6day at two of the
country's major meat packers,
one of them idled by a nation
wide strike. '
Federal mediators planned
to sit down with Swift & Co.
and two unions that went on
strike last Week in a walkout
that idled 17,000 workers in.
34 cities.
Talks were also continuing
between Wilson and Co., and
the unions, the United Pack
ing house Workers of Ameri
ca and the Amalgamated Meat
Cutters and . Butcher Work
men. The Wilson contract, cover
ing 6,500 workers in seven
cities, was extended and ' a
strike threatened for last Fri
day postponed.
The unions struck Swift at
one minute after midnight
Friday. They charged the com
pany was seeking authority
o cut wages drastically in
some southern plants.
. The unions had asked Wil
son and Swift to match con
tracts negotiated first with
Armour & Co. and later
matched by other major meat
packers, calling for increases
of 22 V cents hourly in wages
and benefits.

Corrupt labor leaders were
"asking for trouble," Canham
said. "And they are liable to
find it." He said labor mis
deeds might cause the public
to crack down on unions with
"explosive anger."
The chamber str6ngly sup
ported the labor reform bill
approved ' by Congress last
week.
