Galactosemia, an inherited
enzyme defect at the site of
conversion of a form of glu
cose, causes jaundice and
cataracts as well as mental
deficiency. It can be detected
after birth through an excess
of lactose in the urine.
It is possible, Dr. , Mon
crieff said, to prevent all
three symptoms . with, a lac
tose-free diet starting very
early in infant life. Unfortu
nately, lactose-free foods are
hard to find, and even tiny
amounts of lactose have po
tent- detrimental effects.
Kidney Defect
Water babies have a kid
ney defect and they pass tre
mendous amounts of urine.
The ; condition is genetically
sex-linked; the defective gene
being carried by the female
and the disorder appearing
only in males. Why it results
in mental . deficiency is .not
known.
In order, to keep the baby
alive in the early weeks of
life, one must -almost con
tinually "pour" water into it.
A somewhat less trying fluid
treatment is then maintained
to prevent mental retardation.
The parents of one set of
afflicted twins must feed
them every two hours around
the clock. Concerning a
young medical student with
the disorder, Dr. Moncrieff
said he "was endowed with
a mind simply by giving him
water."
New Plotter Can Watch All Airplanes Approaching U. S.
Colorado Springs, Colo.
(Science service)-A new sys-
ter has been developed for
keeping track of all airplanes,
friendly or unfriendly, ap
proaching or flying over the
U.S.
The new plotting system,
called Iconorama, will be in
stalled here at North Ameri
can Air Defense Command
(NORAD) headquarters and
at Strategic Air Command
(SAC) headquarters at Omaha,
Neb.
Iconorama shows almost in
stantly the positions of air
craft thousands of miles away,
such as those that might be
detected by the Distant Early
Warning defensive radar net
work. By projecting the automati-

murder charge has been post
poned until Monday by Cir
cuit Judge J. J. Murchison
.The youth was indicated on
the charge by the Multnomah
county grand jury Thursday
in connection with the fatal
shooting of David Lee Heads,

Police . said the Denson
youth admitted shooting the
Heads boy Tuesday night on
the front porch of the victim's
home.
Denson told police he did
not mean to kill the other
boy, only to hurt him. Denson
said Heads teased him about
a limp that was caused by an
injury suffered in an acci
dent. Judge Murchison set the
arraignment over to allow
Denson time to obtain an at
torney before pleading to the
charge.
PENNY UNWISE

eral Reserve Bank spokesman
complained Friday that peo
ple are "hanging on to" then
pennies. But he indicated it is
not really because of increas
ed thriftiness. The spokesman
said people have the mistaken
belief that there is a mistake
in the new Lincoln penny is
sued last January and that it
has a premium value as a col
lector's item.
Gasoline-Fume
Addiction Found
In 12-Year-Old Boy
Wilkes - Barre Pa. (Science
Service) - W. M. was 18
months old when he had his
first sniff of gasoline.
At the time, his mother was
working in a shoe factory and
his father was out plowing on
their small farm.
The boy somehow had lo
cated a gasoline container and
seemed to enjoy smelling the
fumes. They served to pacify
him.
Today, W. M. is a 12-year-old
gasoline-fume addict.
The drinking of gasoline
and kerosene by children is
familiar to the medical pro
fession. But known cases of
gasoline inhalation are so rare
that W. M.'s history was giv
en special mention in the cur
rent American Journal of Or
thopsychiatry. Good Pacifier
After discovery of his child's
unusual craving, Mr. M.
found that gasoline, conven
iently placed, was always a
good pacifier for the boy. It
enabled Mr. M. to complete
his farm chores, unimpeded
by his "happy" baby.
However, young W. M.
overdid it. He carried his
gasoline container to meals,
about the house, to bed, and
out of doors. School was the
one place to which his parents
would not permit him to bring
his pacifier.
Some feeble parental at
tempts were made to put a
stop to W- M.'s growing addic
tion. When the addition of
ammonia to the gasoline did
not deter him, the parents
tried medical help. They
were referred to the Child
ren's Service Center of Wy
oming Valley here.
Regarded as 'Queer'
It was found that the boy
had few friends because
children regarded him as
"queer." His school work was
poor. He told an examining
psychiatrist he did not want
to change or grow up. But,
he said, he could stop the
the "habit" if some one really
made him stop.
Although he was found to
be physically and neurologic-
ally normal, his breath con
tained a heavy and offensive
gasoline odor.
The parents rejected an of
fer of psychiatric aid, point
ing out the drawbacks of the
distance to the clinic and the
loss of working time for both.
They wanted to "work it out"
themselves, and it was decid
ed that they would get in
touch with clinic in a year.
This is how the situation
now stands, as reported 1 by
the Center's chief psycholo
gist, Dr. Carl J. Nitsche, and
director, Dr. J. Franklin Rob
inson.

The Iconorama system ex

Traces made by the planes
being tracked are scribed on
a coated slide by a moving
stylus. Date received over
existing teletype lines are
made to guide the stylus over
the slide, scribing a special
metallic coating. The slide
plot measures only one inch
square, yet overall error of
the projected display is said to
be about one part in 1,000.
As many slides as needed
may be used to cover a given
situation.. Each is projected,
in register, on the viewing
screen and in its own identify
ing color.
