In the Day's News
By FRANK JENKINS
From Bonn, West German
capital:
" . West Germans gave Presi
dent Eisenhower a second tu
multuous ovation as he headed
ior the first series of talks
with the major European al
lies that will set the course of
his meeting with Russia's Ni
kita Khrushchev.
- Thousands of freshly scrub
bed school children, freed
from classes for the occasion,
lined the shady streets to
cheer the President As his
car rolled along, the crowds
began chanting rhythmically:
:"Ike, Ike, IKE."
A LL THIS in Germany-with
whom only a short decade
and a half ago we were locked
in bitter and deadly war . . .
All this for the man who led
our victorious armies then.
' War is strange business.
TtORE on the same subject:
1" Four 'and a half decades
"ago, we went to war to MAKE
THE WORLD SAFE FOR
: DEMOCRACY. Democracy is
now in graver danger than it
was then.
Again .
War is strange business. -
STILL MORE of the same:
We've fought the British.
We've fought the Spanish.
We've fought the Mexicans..
We ve fought the Germans.
We've fought the Japs.
They're all NOW our firm
friends.
We've never fought the
French. France is now one of
our problems. We've never
fought the Russians. Russia is
now our greatest menace.
War is CERTAINLY strange
business.
QUESTION:
Why are the Germans so
enthusiastic about us now?
Let's be realistic. There are
two reasons both of them
logical:
1. We licked them in a fair
fight and then treated them
fairly and justly.
2. The Germans realize that
we are their shield and buck
ler against Russian commun
ism. So they're for us.
The same goes for Japan.
B
UT
This fact remains:
War is strange business.

THE SMART FALL COSTUME
IN EASY-TO-MAKE ORIGINAL BY COLE
U
rKINItU FA 1 1 cKN I
A 930 Y-f
by Richard Cok I
Ingenious RICHARD COLE creates the perfect plan for fall
dressmg-a supple sheath that partners with a Chanel-inspired
jacket for day, and travels on its own in the evening. The
dress-utterly simple-is knowingly curved to dramatize the
figure. The scooped necklace can be highlighted with a bib of
pearls or ropes of bright beads. Add to its virtues the fact
that it zips easily up the back, and has, not one, but two side
pockets. We like this costume's air of easy elegance translated
into wool knit, jersey, sheer wool, hubby tweed or cotton-the
binding on the jacket color-matched to the belt. Sewing is
ABC-easy, and the happy result is a costume you'll want to
wear every day from this moment on.
- Printed Pattern A930 is available in Misses' Sizes 10, 12,
14, 16 and 18. Size 16 dress requires 2M yards 39-inch fabric;
jacket requires lVt yards, Yz yards contrast binding.
