Soviet Medicine
A recent study was made
of Soviet medicine by five
American physicians who tra
veled 8,500 miles, and visited
61 institutions
in nine cities.
Their report
was published
r e c e n tly by
the U.S. Pub
lic Health
Service. The
conclu sion
was that the
Soviet phy-

poorly educated and have a
very low social standing. They
are "trade school graduates."
They receive six years of
medical schooling in over
crowded and usually anti
quated and jerry-built facil
ities. Naturally, part of the
course consists of political in
doctrination. Three-fourths of
the Russian physicians are
women. They are handicapped
in their work by having to
use less plentiful and less ac
tive drugs than we have. The
level of sanitation in the areas
visited appeared to be about
50 years behind that in our
country. Much emphasis is
placed on physical therapy
and rest-treatment. The Rus
sian doctors depend less than
we do on laboratory methods
of diagonisis. Clerical help
and office equipment which
is standard in this country is
an unheard of luxury in Rus
sia. The Russian physicians
have done much to wipe out
malaria and venereal diseases.
Tuberculosis, however, is still
rampant. It must be, with their
awful over-crowding, - with
often several families in a
room. The Russian physician
generally has to go where she
is told to go. Her basic salary
ranges from $75 a month
when she graduates, to $220 a
month when she has been
practicing for 15 years! By
comparison, an air-line hostess
gets $140 and a truck-driver
gets from $120 to $160.

American of the Year." She
is superintendent of the Crip
pled Children's School, in
Jamestown, N. D., and has
devoted her lifetime to the
rehabilitation and education
of severely handicapped chil
dren. She has done so well

with only stubs of arms that
ended above the elbow. One
leg ended above the knee and
the other was so mal-formed
she has a club foot. As if she
didn't have enough troubles,
at the age of four, her mother
died. Fortunately, her father
and a 13-year-old sister gave
her every encouragement and
help. Eventually, she was
fitted with artificial limbs,
and soon she was getting
about on crutches. She now
drives her own car. As she
says. "The spirit is a wonder
ful thing."
