tion on its collar after it had
killed his small cat when the
canine bit him.

said Saturday there was hope
the strike against San Fran
cisco and San Mateo county
truckers could be settled soon.
Phil Dindia, chairman of
the local 84 strike committee,
told reporters, "It's entirely
possible some solution for the
situation could develop" in
meetings between the union,
the employers, and a federal
conciliator. The meetings be
gan Friday and continued Sat
urday. Meanwhile leaders of seven
other Teamsters locals decided
at a conference Saturday to
continue to respect local 85's
picket lines, which have been
extended to East Bay and San
ta Clara county branches of
San Francisco firms. There
had been some feeling that
members of the other locals
were not in sympathy with
local 85 members who reject
ed a wage offer accepted by
the other locals.

August Faske, 88, of 414
Hamilton st., Medford, died
at his home Saturday.
He was born in Germany
March 24, 1871, and had been
a resident of this area for 53
years. His parents came to
America in 1872.
Survivors include one
daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Fields,
Santa Cruz, Calif.; one son,
Douglas Faske, Ashland; three
grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.

be Charles T. Duncan, dean
of the school of journalism at
the University of Oregon.
DUncan was elected vice
president Friday at the associ
ation's national convention
being held here this week. He
will succeed Mitchell V.
Charney of the University of
Minnesota later this year.
Duncan has been dean at
Oregon since March, 1956,
and before that had been act
ing dean of the journalism
school since May, 1955.
Warren Price, professor of
journalism at Oregon; was
elected as a representative to
the American Council for

Son Dies in Car
The Dalles (UPD - Edmund R.
Tonn, 21, of Portland, was fa
tally injured late Friday when
his car failed to negotiate a
curve on Highway 97 three
miles north of Moro, state po
lice here reported.
Police said that Tonn, ap
parently an airman, was en
route to Condon Air Force
base when the accident oc
curred. The vehicle rolled for
some 100 feet, police said.
Tonn was the son of Dr. and
Mrs. E. F. Tonn, Grants Pass.

Norblad Seeks Drop Of
Steel Wage Demands

Walter Norblad (R-Ore.) re
quested striking United Steel-
workers to withdraw their
demands for higher wages if
the steel companies would, in
turn, lower then prices.
The Oregon lawmaker said
if the strike should result in
substantial wage --price in
creases in the steel industry,
it could touch off a series of
similar increases in other
basic and related industries,
producing what he termed
"further inflationary forces."
Norblad made the request in
a letter to Steelworkers Presi
dent David J. McDonald.
