Fingers Crossed
On Damage Suits
Against Ag Dept.
Salem -Ray Kelso, herbi
cide control supervisor, is
keeping his fingers crossed
because this is almost too
good to be true: so far this
year, he says, the state de
partment of agriculture has
received only three damage
claims due to alleged losses
resulting from use of chemi
cal weed killers.
Last year 30 claims hit
Kelso's desk. And the low
est of any previous year was
eight claims.
Kelso is equally elated that
so far this year no damage
claim has involved drift of
chemicals applied by any of
the ground or air applicators
licensed by the state. Last
year, drift was one of the
main causes of damages re
ported. A brief account of the
three claims filed this year:
Claim Against Utility
One is against a utility
company. But the depart
ment's investigation showed
a farmer and not the com
pany spray rig caused the
damage. An insurance com
pany is working on a settle
ment. The second claim involves
use of a soil sterilant on a
power sub-station. After a
hard rain, a low spot at the
sub-station washed out across
a wheat field, damaging an
acre of wheat. Settlement
.made.
The third and last com
plaint received to Aug. 12 in
volved a central Oregon po
tato field. This claim is un
der investigation.
Kelso admits it's still pos
sible the department may re
ceive damage claims on 1959
spraying operations, but in the
past few, if any, have been
received after early Sep
tember. Under the herbicide appli
cation law, the department is
authorized to receive and in
vestigate claims from any
landowners who believe their
crops have ben damaged by
application of these weed
killing chemicals.
Clues Lacking in
Slaying of Coed
Los Angeles-ffiPD-Police to
day were without a concrete
lead to the identity of the
killer of attractive University
of Southern California coed
Linda Edna Martin. -
The 21-year-old coed's for
mer husband, John L. Taylor,
24, was completely eliminated
Wednesday as a possible sus
pect in the baffling case, po
lice said.
Capt. Sidney Lambert said
Los Angeles police received a
"timetable" of Taylor's where
abouts at the time of the Sun
day knifing. Taylor was in
Glenview or Ev&nston, 111.,
during the "critical hours,"
according to the Illinois re
port.
Miss Martin, of Rockville
Center, N. Y., vas found
stabbed three times and bleed
ing to death in the stairway
leading to her fiance's apart
ment. Police said she appar
ently was stabbed shortly aft
er she stepped nude from her
bath. t
