Museum at Kerby
Dedicated During
Sunday Ceremony
Cave Junction-The histor
ical museum at Kerby, recent
ly established by the Illinois
Valley Federated Women's
club, was formally dedicated
Sunday.
Dr. A. N. Collman, presi
dent of the Josephine County
Historical society, dedicated
the museum "to the pioneers
who helped make this coun
try what it is today."
More than 100 persons at
tended the ceremony, held on
the front porch of the old
home which was built in th,e
1890's by Frank Stiff. The
women's club purchased it in
January from the George Sav
ages. ,
Josephine County Judge
Raymond Lathrop, principal
speaker, described the only
farm in Josephine county
owned by the same family
continuously for over 100
years.
It is the old White place
in- the Illinois valley, six miles
from Cave Junction.
Reads Letter
Judge Lathrop read a letter
from Harold White, head of
the Southern. Oregon Experi
ment station, Medford, who
wrote that the property had
been in his family 103 years.
Samuel Wilson White and
family left Coldwater, Mich,
in 1852, when gold was dis
covered in the west. They set
tled in the valley in 1855
when they acquired donation
land claim 37.
The pioneer first built a
cabin for the family and in
1862 constructed a large two
atory home. Lumber was pur
chased locally for $90 per
thousand feet.
Stories of the founding of
Kerby were related by Merle
Griffin. He recounted the tale
about a mule which carried
a pool table, and which died
at the spot and put its owner
in business there.
Another "authentic" story
of the community's origin con
cerns a man wearing an $8
pair of sHoes, who walked
over $8 mountain and wore
out the shoes at the Kerby
site.
Museum Dedicated
Griffin emphasized that the
museum be dedicated "not
only to the pioneers, but also
to the spirit that motivated
the fine museum.
Other speakers included
Amos Vobrhies, former editor
of the Grants Pass Courier,
. who praised the work of the
club in renovation of the
building and the way in which
the donated articles were dis
played. Dr. Collman also paid trib
ute to the men and women
who cleaned, painted, paper
ed, repaired the old house.
Refreshments were served
by the club. Mrs. Robert W.
Wilson, in pioneer dress, pre
sided at the guest book.
