Dike Sends Letters Warniing : steel President
Mile To Give Report

Eisenhower told his news con
ference today that he was
sending letters to House
Speaker Sam Rayburn and
Vice President Richard M.
Nixon, presiding officer of the
Senate, warning of serious
repercussions if Congress fails
to act adequately before ad
journment on legislation to
permit raising the interest
rate on long-term federal se
curities, on the requested gas
oline tax increase to finance
the interstate highway build
ing program, and on author
ization for the Federal Hous
ing Administration.
Calls For Labor Bill
-He also in his news con
ference called again for con
gressional approval of a labor
bill close to the version
adopted by the House and
now in a House-Senate con
ference. Eisenhower read a state
ment giving five major pur
poses of his tfip to Germany,
England and France:
1. To pledge this country's
"devotion to peace with hon
or and justice" and to support
"western unity in opposing,
by force if necessary, any ag
gression and to preserve the
defensivve strength required
by our common security.'
Reiterate Readiness
2. To suggest to each of the
key officials with whom he
confers in Europe that they
reiterate their readines to
negotiate "realistically" with
Russia "on any reasonable
and mutually enforceable
plan" for disarmament, to
make a real start towards
solving the problems of the
divided Germany and to help
reduce world tension.
3. To discuss with each head
of government problems com
mon to that nation and the
United States.
4. To rededicate the United
States to the North Atlantic
treaty.
Aid for Needy Nations
5. To suggest to the heads
of government that they ex
plore together ways and
means of cooperating in as
sistance to the underdevel
o p e d nations. Eisenhower
added after completing his
statement this could be the
most important item on his
agenda.
He said that unless the civ
ilized world was willing and
ready to share in the burdens
of making a better life possi
ble for these nations, then the
world was going to have a
terrible time of it.
Shall Never Retreat
As for readiness to negoti
ate with Russia, Eisenhower
said the big allies should
also "reiterate jointly that re
gardless of pressure or induce
ment we shall never retreat
from our ideals or principles
or weaken in our resolution
to remain secure as we con
tinue the search for peace."
The President said that as
he prepared to wing over the
Atlantic Wednesday he wished
he could extend his visit to
the capital of every nation
dedicated to individual lib
erty and dignity; he would
like to go to all the nations
that want to live "only under
a government established by
the consent of the governed."
SIGN AGREEMENT
Warsaw - (DPD Poland has
signed a $5 million dollar
agreement to build four ship
yards for Indonesia, it was
announced today. The largest
of the yards will be construct
ed in Java and will be capable
of turning out 40 wooden fish
ing vessels annually.
New York - (CPU - David J.
McDonald, president of the
striking United Steelworkers
Union, was to go before the
nation's 33-man ' , executive
board today to report on the
statemated s i x- w e e k old
strike.
Union and industry negoti
ators were to continue their
clause-by-clause examination
of the expired contract but
major issues were not expect
ed to be discussed.
McDonald presumably would
tell the executive board there
was no immediate settlement
in sight. Neither side appar
ently has budged from its pre
strike position and no serious
steel shortage is expected be
fore the middle of next month
at the earliest.
The American Steel Ware
house Association reported
Monday night in Cleveland
that steel service centers have
higher inventories now than
they had at the start of the
1956 strike, which lasted 36
Mays.
The association said inven
tories stand at 3,125,000 tons,
compared with 3,700,000 tons
when the strike startea

Home Ransacking
Solved by Police
The mysterious ransacking
Sunday of the Jack Edson
residence, 108 Geneva st., was
solved Monday with the ques
tioning of a 5-year-old neigh
borhood boy, Medford police
reported.
Police said the boy admit
ted playing with toys, spilling
fingernail polish, setting off
flashbulbs, removing a total
of S1.73 and spilling turtle
food in the dining room. But,
police reported, he denied
eating any cake.
Father and Son
Nabbed in Burglary
Portland - (DPD - Multnomah
county sheriff's officers Mon
day arrested Ernest Osborne,
40, Portland, on a charge of
burglary not in a dwelling.
Osborne was arrested in
connection with a Saturday
night burglary of the Meadow-land
dairy and the Fair
view farms in Portland. In
both cases milk, butter and
eggs were taken.
Police said Osborne was ar
rested after his 16-year-old
son implicated him. The boy's
wallet was found in the
Meadowland plant after the
Saturday burglary.
Osborne told Detective
Clyde Lowery hwand his son
had entered the dairies to ob
tain food for his family.
Search Intensified
For Honor Escapee
Yacolt, Wash.-flJPD-Police to
day intensified a search for
Theodore Spradlin, 29, miss
ing from a Washington state
prison honor came near Ya
colt, .after a handyman in the
area reported, the fugitive
had visited his quarters.
Oscar Meyers, 50, employed
at the Jack Witt home near
Yacolt, north of Vancouver,
said he had been out getting
groceries, 'and when he re
turned he found a stranger
eating in his cabin.
Meyers told police the
stranger told him "he was
the escaped prisoner from the
honor camp, and then he
asked if he could have anoth
er glass of milk."
Meyers said the man drank
the milk, then left "and made
no effort to harm me. He dis
appeared into the brush near
the cabin."
Officials at the honor camp
said the only escaped prison
er was Theodore Spradlin,
"who was serving time on a
forgery count when he es
caped Friday.
