Determining Sex
Of Unborn Still
Remains Puzzle
New Haven, Conn.-(Science
Service) - Expectant mothers
still face the ancient and per
plexing problem of whether
to knit blue or pink booties,
despite the advances of this
scientific age.
Although scientific re
search appears to be on the
verge of perfecting a reliable
method of predicting the sex
of unborn babies, the present
"wait and see' policy seems
to be best.
One of the latest scientific
methods, that could be the
answer to the problem, in
volves analyzing the amniotic
fluid of the pregnant woman.
No claims have yet been
made as to its accuracy, how
ever. Guessing Game
But scientists and pseudo
scientists have engaged in
one of the most frustrating
guessing games in the past
4,000 years of history.
The superstitions relating
to the prediction of fetal sex
illustrate in fascinating man
ner the credulity and skepti
cism of mankind, its bondage
to tradition and its flights of
relationalization and imagin
ation, Dr. Thomas R. Forbes
of the Yale University School
of Medicine points out in a
review in the Proceedings of
the American Philosophical
Society.
The oldest method on rec
ord goes back4.000 years to
the Egyptians. They recom
mend, in writings an ancient
papyrus, that a mixture of .
dates and sand be placed in
two flasks. Add barley or
spelt to one, wheat to the
other, after soaking each in
the urine of the pregnant
woman. If the' wheat sprouts
first, a son will be born; if
barley, a girl.
Hippeeraies' Tests
Even Hippocrates, the fath
er of medicine, got into the
guessing game by describing
both tests and physical signs
for determining fetal sex. He
believed that boys develop
on the right side of the uterus
and girls on the left. There
fore, if the fetus were a boy,
the right eye of the mother
would be brighter and clear
er and her right breast larg
er. If a girl, the opposite side
would show these signs, he
explained.
This persistent belief that
the male baby would be
brighter or stronger or more
active during pregnancy dom
inated the beliefs of people
down through the ages. Even
today there is the saying that
an active fetus will be a boy.
Biologist Offers
Night Driving Aids
Southbridge, Mass. - (CPB
Dr. Oscar W. Richards, chief
biologist for the American
Optical Co., offers motorists
six rules for night driving.
-Take enough time to get
used to seeing when leaving
a bright place before starting
to drive at night.
-Relax the eye muscles by
looking about as much as
safe driving permits. Never
stare long in the same spot.
-Protect the eyes from
glare. Look to the side of the
road rather than at the source
of the light.
-At night, never wear sun
glasses or tinted spectacles.
Keep spectacles, wind
shield and lights clean and
free from surface damage.
-Slow down until the per
ceptual load is not too great
for good, safe driving.
Arkansas Claims
Historians Wrong
Little Rock, Ark. - (DPI -
The Arkansas Publicity and
Parks Commission claims that
the first shot of the Civil
War was fired, not at Fort
Sumpter, S. C, but at Pine
Bluff, Ark.
In April, 1861, the com
mission says, the Jefferson
Guards halted several Fed
eral boats at Pine Bluff as
they were steaming up the
Arkansas River with guns,
ammunition and supplies for
garrisons at Little Rock, Fort
Smith and F' rt Gibson, Okla.
Regular Arkansas troops
acting under the orders of
Governor Rector fired at the
boats and their cargoes were
-seized - for the Confederate
Army, according to this account.

joke making the rounds in
