    Redlegs' Ueucombe
Downs SF Giants;
Help Out Dodgers
By TIM MORIARTY
United Press International
Although they now wear
"San Francisco" across the
front of their uniforms, the
Giants are still the blankety
blank Giants to big Don New
combe. And because of this hatred
for Bill Rlgney's crew, which
goes back to his glory days
in Brooklyn, the big Cincin
nati right-hander indirectly is
helping his old Dodger team
mates in their bid to catch
the Giants in the current Na
tional League pennant chase.
Newcombe, backed up by a
13-hit Cincinnati attack, turn
ed in a 7-0 shutout victory
over San Francisco Tuesday
night while the Dodgers pull
ed to within two games of the
pace-setters by outlasting the
Milwaukee Braves, 7-6, in a
13-inning, 4li-hour marathon.
Repulski Raps Spahn
The Dodgers scored their
winning run against the
Braves on a triple by Wally
Moon and Rip Repulski's sin
gle off ace Warren Spahn, the
seventh Milwaukee pitcher.

Cincinnati
Cincinnati - (UPD - The Los
Angeles Dodgers, who won
their first series in the cur
rent road trip by beating Mil
waukee 7-6 Tuesday night for
a two out of three mark, come
up against their toughest foes
tonight, the sixth-place Cin
cinnati Redlegs.
The Reds have taken 11 out
of 18 meetings this season
with the Dodgers. Seven of
those wins came from nine
games on their home terri
ritory. Danny McDevitt (8-8) was
selected to try and break the
Dodger jinx tonight against
Cincinnati's Joe Nuxhall (7-9).
Nuxhall has beaten Los Ange
les two out of three tries this
year.
Los Angeles moved to with
in two games of the National
league leading San Francisco
Giants Tuesday night when
the Giants lost to Cincinnati
and the Dodgers won their 13-
inning thriller from the
Braves.
Moon, Repulski Team
Rip Repulski supplied the
winning run when he drove in
Wally Moon who had tripled.
Repulski's single came with
one out in the 13th frame.
The Braves had managed to
tie up the four and a half-hour
game twice before Repulski's
winning blow. They knotted
the score 5-5 in the ninth
when Dodger outfielder Don
Demeter allowed an easy pop
fly to trickle through his fin
gers with two out. His error
allowed the tying run to
cross.
In the 11th frame the Dodg
ers again moved out front on
a walk, single and sacrifice
fly, but the Braves came
right back to tie it up at 6-6
on a home run by Hank
Aaron.
Don Drysdale, star Dodger
hurler, was seeking his elu
sive 16th win in the game, but
he failed for the third straight
time to get it. He pitched
10 13 innings before being
replaced by Larry Sherry
who was the winner.

What makes Beam bourbon taste so
good? More than anything it is the fact
that today, as for 164 years, it is still the
Beams who make BEAM, under the

is why you can always buy Beam

The Seattle Rainiers con
tinue to be the hottest thing
in the Pacific Coast league
and it's having a strange ef
fect upon the Rainier players.
For example. Mark Free
man, a giant of a pitcher with
an almost equally large
earned run average 4.38,
fired a no-run, no hitter Tues
day night as the Rainiers de
feated Vancouver. It was Se
attle's 13th victory in its last
14 games.
The Suds are now only four
and a half games behind
league-leading Portland, but
because of the tightness of the
PCL race, they're still in
seventh place.
Giants Drop 12th Straight
Phoenix, the coldest team
in the league, lost its 12th
straight decision by falling to
San Diego, 6-3.
Freeman, a 6-6 righthander,
struck out 12 batters in his
surprisingly good show. He
is now 9-8 on the season. Free
man walked two in the second
inning and that constituted
the only Mountie threat. The
only other Vancouver base
runner was Jim Finigan, who
was safe on an error in the
sixth.
Sacs-Bets Rained Out
Rain washed out Sacra
mento's contest at Salt Lake
in the fourth inning in the
only other game scheduled
Tuesday night.
Seattle's winning run came
in the second inning on a sin
gle by Hal Bevan, a double by
Carroll Hardy and a ground
out by Rudy Regalado. The
Rainiers added two insurance
runs in the seventh on a walk
to Regalado, a sacrifice by
Harry Malmberg, a single by
Freeman and a Mountie error.
Bill Wilson slammed his
21st homer of the season for
Phoenix but that was the only
bright spot in the Giant pic
ture. Bud Podbielan worked
the first six innings to get the
win while the loss went to
Curt Barclay. The. Padres
rapped out 14 hits in scoring
their" six tallies. '

Milwaukee"- (UPD - It's Jack
Sanford (12-9) vs. Lew Bur
dette (16-12) tonight as the
league leading San Francisco
Giants seek to knock- the de
fending champion Milwaukee
Braves five games behind in
the National league.
The Giants set the stage for
the key Brave series Tuesday
night by dropping a 7-0 de
cision to Don Newcombe and
the Cincinnati Reds.
Jim Davenport, ace Giant
third sacker, will miss both
Brave contests because of a
badly wrenched knee he suf
fered Monday night in a col
lision at home plate. Either
Jose Pagan, who handled third
Tuesday night, or Danny
O'Connell, will work the hot
corner and there is even an
outside chance Jackie Brandt
may be the call.
Newcombe's victory Tues
day night was his fifth of the
season over the Giants against
one defeat. The big right
hander was never in trouble.
