Are You Supporting
Powder-Post Beetles?
Maybe you are supplying
food and shelter to a group of
"powder-post" beetles without
knowing it; they 'may be in
your furniture, in your floors
or even in the picture frames.
They just love to perforate
the handles of shovels, hoes,
rakes, or any wooden-handled
garden tools.
The neat little holes that
you may find in the hardwood
rocking chair, baseboards, or
in the back of the piano, are
pretty conclusive evidence
that they have got their little
beaks into your woodwork.
Because they delight to
work in posts is how they got
their name "powde r-post"
beetles. They've been around
for a long time but not one
noticed them too much for
they confined their boring ac
tivities to the trees of the
forests. But since the forests
have all been pretty well
thinned out, they have trans
ferred their attentions to fur
niture, baseboards and hard
wood floors.
Only Old Wood
Powder-post beetles have no
gastronomical interest in new
wood; they want it well sea
soned and are never present
until the. wood is at least a
year old; and they also de
mand that it be dry.
The adult insect lays her
eggs in the pores of sapwood,
provided it is dry, so that
when the little demons hatch
out they can begin chewing on
the delicious wood without

wasting time. These larvae
chew their way by cutting ir
regular galleries inside the
wood, and packing the saw
dust behind them in the tun
nel as they progress. They
spend several months in the
larvae stage and eventually
grow into adult beetles.
When full grown they get
the urge to venture out into
the great, wide world, and to
accomplish this they stop
gnawing and drill a hole to
the outside; a hole about as
large around as a kitchen
match stem. Through this hole
they escape, and launch them
selves on their mating flight.
When they return they are
again ready to enter the wood
to lay another batch of eggs.
Of course they have no senti
mental attachment for the "old
home"; they hunt up a new
rocking chair, or a tasty base
board, and start operations in
a new location.
Ttll-Tal Holes
. It is these tiny shot-holes,
or exits, that give them away,
and reveal where they have
been working. Mostly, the
poor guy who owns the furni
ture, or the baseboard, or
hardwood floor, never suspect
ed their presence until he ac
cidentally found the holes. By
that time much, damage has
usually been done.

rimental unit Things of Sci
ence, issued here by Science
Service.
The current kit, which
deals with optical illusions,
consists of six specimens and
an explanatory leaflet. The
specimens include cutouts of
misleading drawings, twin
figures, shifting designs, a
bird and cage, a distorted
room and an illusion window.
In 21 detailed experiments
the experimenter is shown
how a person often does not
see things exactly as they are
or as they are related to each
other. Only part of what is
perceived comes through the
senses from the object. The
rest is "read into" perception
by. the mind, based on previ
ous experience.

Two Bound Over to
Grand Jury in Court
Two men, one of Medford
and one from Grants- Pass,
were bound over to 4he grand
jury yesterday in district
court on charges of rape.
Lymon Stubbs, 21, of North
Pacific highway, Medford,
and John Corbell, 19, Grants
Pass, are being held in the
county jail on $1,500 bait.
The two youths are charged
with raping two Medford girls
under 18 years of age. They
were arrested Saturday night
at a local dance hall by sher
iff's deputies.

Emotions Said To
Play Major Role in
Likes and Dislikes

prejudice.
Emotion plays an import
ant role in a person's likes
and dislikes and can be mea
sured physically, Dr. Joseph
B. Cooper of San Jose Col
lege (Calif.) reports.
Dr. ' Cooper has shown this
emotional response when a
prejudice is challenged in
what he describes as the first
physiological measurement of
the relation between emotion
and prejudice. He reports his
findings in the journal
Science.
Physiological Changes
Emotion involves many
physiological changes that mo
bilize the body to meet emer
gency,, the psychologist ex
plains. He measurer one of
these changes while the sub
ect listened to statements that
neither "panned" or praised
groups he had already evalu
ated as "liked intensely" or
disliked intensely." The gal
vanic skin response, in which
electrical changes are record
ed by electrodes attached to
a person's palms, was the
technique used.
Analysis of the responses of
the college students tested
showed a further distinction
between positive and negative
prejudices. The students dis
played more emotion when
complimentary state ments
were made about disliked
groups tan with complimen
tary statements about liked
groups. The responses were
compared in both cases with
complimentary state ments
about groups to which the
student expressed "neutral
ity." Procedure Reversed
In another test the proce
dure of having the student
rank ethnic and national
groups and then measuring
his emotional response was re
versed. First the student lis
tened while complimentary
statements were made about
nine of these groups. His gal
vanic skin response was mea
sured. On the basis of the stu
dent's physical reactions, the
researchers determined which
group was most liked and
which least liked.
Later, the student ranked
the nine groups in a paired
comparison test; he circled
the name of the one group
which he preferred in each
pair. Each group name, such
as Austrians, Jews, Mexicans

the Navy recruiting service
announced today that the
Navy recruiting office in the
post office building will re
main open Monday until 9
p.m., beginning Aug. 24.
Office hours during the
week will remain the same
as before: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Tuesday through Friday and
9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

in amplification with a fre
quency shift modulator, the
device permits a two-fold in
crease in the loudness of the
P.A. system without incurring
instability, Bell Laboratories
says.

gery, for instance, based on
experimental pain.
Dr. Beecher suggests, how
ever, that experimental pain
produced slowly may be use
ful in judging pain-relieving
drugs. An anxiety factor or
fear may thus be introduced
similar to the "real life" situ
ation, he concludes in the
journal Science.
