Yankees Seek
Showdown On
Players Rights
Nett York (UPD Can the
"getaway" game in a series
between two big-league base
ball teams be scheduled as a
night game without permis
sion of the visiting players?
No, the New York Yankee
players insisted unanimously
today and indicated they
want a showdown right now
on what they figure are
"players' rights" in the mat
ter of scheduling night games.
Yes, says President Bill
Veeck of the Chicago White
Sox, who has listed the Sox
Yankees game in. Chicago
Aug. 24 as a night game.
"We will show up that aft
ernoon," said pitcher Bob
Turley, the Yankees' player
representative, today in tones
I that indicated he means busi
I ness. "We won't be there that
night."' .
Turley explained that the
players believe an American
league rule which says that
permission of "the visiting
club" must be obtained to
make the last game of a ser
ies a night game means "the
players of the visiting club."
But Veeck insists that the
words "visiting club" means
officials cf the visiting club.
He says the players' approval
is needed "only in the event
the game precedes a day game
on the following day."
"Their game on the follow
ing day at Cleveland is at
night,' Veeck pointed out. :

We are indeed fortunate
here in Jackson county, ' be
cause we have the largest mi
gratory blacktail deer herd in
the West as part of our wild
life populations at the present
time. This should be realized
now because if certain con
ditions continueas they now
exist we will no longer have
the largest migratory black
tail herd In the West and may
be no migratory blacktail
herd at alL Deer from this
herd are . being killed at the
rate of two or three a day and
at that rate the herd will soon
be brought to the point where
its existence is jeapordized.
DEAD DEER
i This story really began
ever two years ago but my
interest in it began last
Monday whan I helped
Charlie Shtpard, the state
game commission's local
game biologist, drag six
dead deer from the waters
of Keen creek reserroir
and the Howard Prairie de
livery canal, both of which
are part of the new Talent
irrigation project. One of
the deer 'was a big four
point buck with his antlers
till in velvet: the others
consisted of three does and
two small fawns. All of
them had the hair worn off
and the skin broken on the
ankles and knees of their
forlegs and under the jaws
as evidence of their strug
gles to get out of the canal
that had trapped them.
DEATH DEALING CANAL
The 18.8 miles of canal be
tween Howard Prairie dam
and Keene creek reservoir
was designed to deliver water
for power development and
irrigation and was never in
tended to also deliver deer
carcasses by the half-dozen..
About 17 miles of the canal is
of a tranezoidal design with
slanting walls while the rest
is of a bog design with verti
cal walls. The 17-mile stretch
is 11 feet wide and the other
is six feet wide. The canal is
uncovered except for cross-
hies for vehicles and deer
here and there along its
length. When the canal is
full.as it is now, the water is
about three feet deep. This
doesn't sound like a danger
ous ditch and it would seem
that deer could jump it easily
but this is not the case. Deer
have been found dead in it
when it was dry and at the
rate they are dying m it right
now there is proof enough
that somebody, goofed.
DESK JOCKEY DECISIONS
1 When the game commis
sion studied the . plans of
the Bureau of Reclamation
regarding this ditch it asked
that ' the canal be fenced'
along its entire length with
a deer-proof fence as recom
mended by Charlie Shepard.
The' bureau decided that
the crot sings would be suf
ficient but that they would
be willina to cooperate in
i any other way that would
! not involve the cost of
fencing. Atv a result, three
ramps were made and in
stalled in the diteh to help
the deer get out, but so far
they have been generally in
effective. It would seem the
bureau presumed a bit too
much when it decided that
deer think like humans and
would rather look for a
crossing instead of crossing
wherever they approached
the ditch. The bureau also
mad a mistake in not rea
lising that the canal crossed
the path of the migratory
herd and then compounded
this mistake in disregards
ing the recommendations of
the game biologist.
TO THE RESCUE
Fortunately, the people who
made the mistake now realize
it and are doing what they can
to stop the drownings. More
ramps are to be installed but

this is merely a stopgap mea
sure and until the canal is
either fenced or covered the
deer are going to die. All the
crossings and . ramps ever
made won't stop the fawns
and dogs from being trapped
ia the ditch and being killed
by it. Once they are in the
ditch they turn and fight the
current and the slippery walls
until they are exhausted and
then they drown. Simple logic
tells us that if we lose the
does and fawns we lose the
herd. '
FRUSTRATION! '
It was a bitter and frus
trating experience to drivo
the length of the canal and
pull dead animals out and
roll them down the hillside
to rot and finally disappear.
We kept hoping that we
might find one we could
tare but our hopes were
nerer realized. Along most
of the . canal length the
walls were scarred with the
frantic efforts the deer
made in trying to', escape.
Here and there we could
see the marks ' of success
where a wet body had
scrambled out but no mat
ter how many escape the
numbers that do not are the
future of the herd and with
them gone so is the herd.
We can't save the deer al
ready gone but we can ask
that the rest be protected
from the same fate.
