Birds Ht
Conventions, Too
People of similar interests
often meet together from time
to time, in groups, to talk over
mutual problems and compare
experiences. These get-togethers
are sometimes callend
"conventions."
Many varieties of birds, too,
seem to have a. similar idea;
some even may have the
"service club" formula, by
meeting frequently. If your
home happens to be near to
a tree where these birds hold
their nightly "meeting," you
will have an idea how noisy
a "convention" can be; you
may even want to break up
the meeting. ,
There are some birds, name-
. . A 1 i
jy, crows, sparrows, or starl
ing, that become so extremely
noisy as to become a public
nuisance. Often drastic meas
ures must be resorted to to
drive the "members of the
convention" to some distant
"meeting place."
Thousands of Birds
There may be hundreds, or
even thousands, of individual
birds at any of these gather
ings. The "meeting" is usually
called to order in the late
afternoon, right after the
members have spent the better
part of the day securing food,
and dodging the neighborhood
cats. Then, at the end of the
day they feel they have time
foa few hours of social dis
course. 3
To the casual human observ
er, the clamor is aimless and
senseless; it sometimes seems
that every bird is yelling in
stead of listening. This may, '
or may not be true; no one, so
far, has been in on any of the
meetings as a voting member.
Other birds appear to hold
, meetings too. Ducks and her
ons select a suitable place and
move in for get-togethers. Us
ually these birds come to
gether in the fall of the year,
after the busy nesting season,
apparently to talk over the
events of the past season; per
haps may even compare notes
and plan for the year ahead.
Accomplishments?
These gatherings have not
gone unnoticed by scientific
observers who have wondered
for a long time just what these
bird conventions accomplish,
if anything. So far, not too
much information is available.
There always seems to be
a leader; sometimes the
"speaker" appears to be un
seated, and a new bird takes
the limb. The former one then
takes a seat back in the hall
and listens. Sometimes these
conventions go on for weeks,
depending perhaps on the
weather. A storm often breaks
up the meeting, causing all
the members to give up and go
home.
Perhaps after a long sum
mer of narrow escapes, the
birds get together and decide
where the next meeting will
be held. To us that have to
listen, it seems like a jumble
of squawks and meaningless
twittering. Gathering of birds,
or of people, often sound that
way to those of us .on the

Dependents Benefits
Explained by Jacobson
Dependents of disabled in
dividuals receiving social se
curity benefits may now also
draw monthly benefits, ac
cording to Edward B. Jacob
son, district manager of the
Medford Social Security of
fice. These dependents benefits
provide family members se
curity against loss of income
because of" severe disability
suffered by? the household
head. If the person is now
receiving disability insurance
benefits, his wife, her hus
band, or children may be en
titled to dependents benefits.
An application must be
made no later than" Sept. 30,
1959, in order to avoid the
loss of one or more months'
benefits as retroactivity is
limited to 12 months from
the date a claim is filed. No
payments can be made to de
pendents of disabled work
ers before September, 1958,
the month x the law was
changed.
Jacobson emphasized that
benefits are not paid auto
matically but that an appli
cation must be filed. He said
the social security office is
ready to answer "questions
regarding eligibility require
ments and to assist depend
ents in filing the necessary
applications.
Persons now receiving dis
ability insurance payments
and who have dependents in
the family who may qualify
for benefits, Jacobson said to
contact the social security
office at 1005 East Main st.,
Medford.

Wiesendanger Talks
To County Group
"If ever there was a time
to promote Keep Oregon
Green and fire prevention in
your own neighborhood, this
is certainly it," Albert Wie&
endanger, executive secretary
of the Keep Oregon Green

He arrived in Medford Tues
day to confer with Jackson
county association members.
"Fire statistics 'for this
year up to Aug. 10 show a
considerable increase in the
number of man-caused forest
fires "and "acreage burned,"
he said.
"We can expect little re
lief until fall rains come, so
Keep Oregon Green is ap

quicker the report is received
the better chance there is to
promptly control the fire's

. "Hunters planning to go
antelope hunting Saturday
are asked to be careful with
fire and smoking in hunting
areas, as range lands are very
dry," he added.
