Adulf Indian
Training Law
Changes Urged
Portland - (DID - The Inte
rior Department has recom
mended a change in the law
under which adult Indians
are given vocational training
at federal expense.
The plan, as announced by
the local Bureau of Indian
Affairs office, would establish
three priorities of eligibility.
Top priority would go to
Indians residing on trust or
restricted lands or federal
lands under the Interior De
partment's jurisdiction. Sec
ond priority would go to In
dians who within the preced
ing three years have moved
to urban communities from
residences on or near Indian
reservations under the ' BIA
relocation services program.
Third priority would be given
to Indians residing on or near
reservations but not on trust,
restricted or federal land,
la Report To Congress
The proposal to amend the
1956 Indian adult vocational
training law is embodied in
an Interior Department re
port to Congress on a Senate
bill. In its present form the
bill would require the pro
gram be made available to
Indians who live on or near
a reservation without regard
to residence or trust property.
Assistant Secretary Roger
Ernst said the effect would
be to nullify a Department
regulation which now makes
the program available pri
marily" to Indians in the top
priority category proposed
He recommended the bill be
enacted only if amended as
proposed.
Cook's New Recipe
Uses Metal, Glass
Hdlden, Mass. - (UPD - In tlie
cellar of her home, Mrs.
Elizabeth -Marshall "cooks"
plate - glass "sandwiches"
with fillings of broken glass
and metal turnings.
During a 70-hour kiln proc
ess, the plate glass softens
like grilled cheese and fuses
with the broken colored glass
and metal. The result is a
solid, slightly uneven block
with a center core of riotous
colors in free-form designs.
The fused glass can be used
for many things such as win
dow panes, room dividing
screens, cigarette box lids,
decorative garden walls and
shower stall doors.
