A friend (who is not a resi
dent of Portland) writes me:
"I went into the new Trader
Vic's restaurant in the Ben
son Hotel for lunch the other
day. I was attired in sports
clothes, having on a button-
ed-up sports shirt, but no tie,
and what do you know?
"One of those sunburned
Scotsmen they have in there
told me I d have to nave a
tie on and that he (a Jap)
would be glad to lend me one
of his! Needless to say.
picked up my hat and walked
out.
"Imagin Portland going
high-hat! Maybe that's what's
the matter with the Centen
nial attendance."
A H ME. "Tis a rugged world
Awe live in, indeed.
But let's not lose hope
Let's look at the doughnut,
and not at the hole.

Only a few decades ago
My friend had walked into

WITHOUT A COAT, he
would have been told to put
. a coat on or else!
Nor is that- all.
The coat 'he would have
had to nut on. would have
been 'constructed of material
about a quarter of an inch
thick, and would have been
LINED to boot. Thus attired,
he would have had to sweat
it out, even though the mer
cury was up toward the cen
tury mark.
In those days, they hadn't
even invented THIN clothes.
The point to remember is
that the world is getting BET
TER, rather than worse.
rf DEFENSE of Portland,
I'd like to quote a recent
editorial in the Hartford
Courant, published in Hart
ford, Connecticut. The piece
reads:
"There is no cause at once
so noble and so futile as the
attempt to get the human
male to act like a rational
being during hot weather by
doffing his conventional habi
liments and adapting himself
to the weather conditions."
As these lines are read in
"homes, in barber shops, in
offices and stores, it's dollars
to doldrums the man reading
them has his legs encased in
two hot cylinders of woven
materials and has a binding
strip of cloth around his neck.
"And, if he is a community
leader, he will also be wear
ing a coat. For a civic leader
would as lief be , caught in
downtown Hartford in his
underdrawers ; as without a
jacket to his suit."

Portland than you would be
