Troop Launching
Of Alias Near
Cape Canaveral,: Fla.-ttJPD-The
way appeared clear today
for the first attempt at a troop
launching of an operational
model of the Atlas interconti
nental ballistic missile.
A prototype of the combat
type Atlas, the nation's first
ICBM, roared off on a 5,000
mile flight Tuesday and the
Air Force said preliminary
data indicated the missile "ap
parently achieved most of its
test objectives."
Usually reliable sources said
prior to the firing that if the
test was successful, Air Force
troops at Vandenberg Air
Force base, Calif., would at
tempt to fire an Atlas next
month. Vandenberg is the first
operational ICBM launching
site. ' '

Qregon Laws on Moving Explosives Far From Uniform
Eugene - (UPD Local laws
regulating the movement of
explosives are- far from uni
form in Oregon and some
cities have no such ordinances
at all, a spokesman for the
League of Oregon Cities said
Wednesday. -
In the wake of last week's
truck explosion 1 in Roseburg,
which killed 12 persons and
caused a estimated $10 mil
lion worth of property dam
age, the League said it usual
ly takes such a disaster to
provoke a town into adopting
regulations.
It said that Portland and
Baker have excellent ordi
nances" and that a number of
others . including Eugene,
Springfield, The Dalles and
Hood River, have adopted the
fire prevention code of the
National Board of Underwrit
ers containing a strict section
governing the transportation
and storage of dangerous ma
terials.""7 ,
ICC HasRules
Some other communities,
the League spokesman said,
exercise some control over
the situation with parking
laws and regulations of truck
traffic within the city limits.
In addition to local ordi
nances, the Interstate Com
merce Commission has many
regulations covering the
transportation of explosives
and Chairman Kenneth Tug

Cabbie Loses Fare
Over Word Mix-up
Buffalo, N.Y.-(UPD-"Loaded"
is a loaded word that cost
a , woman taxi driver a fare
one recent day.
When Buffalo cabbies pick
up a passenger, they call head
quarters by shortwave radio
and say as a matter of rou
tine, "Number so-and-so load
ed." In this particular case, Mrs.
Rita Costello's passenger also
was loaded.. He took offense
at her report, she said, made
her let him out and staggered
away muttering, "You didn't
have to tell 'em."
believed his agency has juris
diction in the Roseburg case.
One ICC regulation pro
hibits the parking of unat
tended trucks carrying ex
plosives, and a bill pending in
Congress would tighten exist
ing rules on interstate car
riers. " . , '
Roseburg city officials have
said they knew of no local,
ordinance governing ' trucks
carrying explosives, but
Douglas County District At
torney Avery Thompson said
a grand jury would try to
determine whether any laws
were1 violated.
