260 Complaints
Received by
Sheriff's Office
More complaints were re
ceived by the Jackson county
sheriff's office in July than
in any previous month, the
department's monthly com
pilation of reports, released
this week, shows.
Two hundred and sixty fel
ony, misdemeanor and mis
cellaneous complaints were
received, an increase of more
than 50 per cent over July
of last year, and 63 more
than the previous high month,
August, 1956.
In July, 40 felony com
plaints were received, 71 mis
demeanor complaints and 149
miscellaneous complaints. Of
the felony complaints 12 in
volved grand larceny, 10 in
volved burglary and 9 involv
ed fictitious checks.
The number of civil papers
served by the sheriffs office
also reached an all-time high
last month. Four hundred and
forty-one were served, which
is an increase of almost 100
over the previous high month,
There were 82 persons lodg
ed in county-jail last month-
58 miles. 4 females and 20
Juveniles.
There were 20 reports of
petty larceny, which com
prised the largest single of
fense in the misdemeanor com
plaints, and 9 complaints of
indiscriminate shooting.

Local Hospital
Tumor Registry
Report Submitted
The first annual report of
the Sacred Heart hospital tu
mor registry has been sub
mitted by the hospital's com
mittee on cancerJt was pre
sented to the hospital staff
"according to the directive
and as a prerequisite for aiv
ceptance by the American Col
lege of Surgeons."
All patients admitted . to
Sacred Heart between June
1, 1957 and May 21, 1959,
with a diagnosis - of cancer
are included in the report.
Of the total of 233 cases,
226 were confirmed histologi
cally, giving a microscopic
confirmation percentage of 97
per cent. At the end of a
two-year period, 78.9 per cent
of the total cases survive.
Thirty-nine cases were pre
sented in eleven staff confer
ences attended by an average
of 20 physicians, according
to the' report.
Of the total cases, reported
the past two years, 75 affected
the breast and genital organs;
51, digestive organs; 23, uri
nary organs; 10 each, lym
phatic and hemotopoietic tis
sues and respiratory system;
and 68 other sites.
The registry was described
as "one of the most important
projects undertaken locally by
the American Cancer society."
The London bankers' clear

The spokesman, Donald A
Clarke, appeared at the Jack
son County Chamber of Com
merce weekly roundtable
luncheon to discuss the associ
ation's efforts to combat vice,
crime, juvenile 'delinquency,
social disease and the break
down of family life.
The association was aided
last year by a $108 outlay
from the United Medford Cru
sade.- A $165 quota for the
ASHA has been set for the
Crusade's fund drive this fall,
according to Howard B. Cook,
Crusade executive secretary
who appeared with Clarke at
the luncheon.
Confidential Surveys
The confidential- surveys,
Clarke said, are directed from
a New York office to which
the investigators reply directly.
The survey results, he con
tinued, are forwarded for in
formation and corrective ac1
tion to mayors, city managers,
chiefs of police, state ' attor
neys general and boards of
health.
Clarke said after the lunch
eon that a survey of Medford
had been made in the last two
or three years, he was not
sure exactly when.
Medford is now a "clean"
city, he said. But he warned
that it could become vice-rid
den again if officials and citi
zens relaxed their vigilance.
He said there used to be a
huge vice 'ring operating
throughout Oregon and the
west coast.
Survey Results
Asked if the results of the
recent survey he referred to
might be available locally;
Clarke said he thought the re
port would probably (be found
at tne state level, several city
and county officials Tuesday
said they were not familiar
with any such report.
"I can state categorically-,"
Clarke told the small group
at the roundtable, "that you
do not have commercial vice
without graft. Somebody is
getting something out of it.
Somebody is being paid off."
"One of the best methods
of prevention" is to keep a
community "informed and
alerted," Clarke said.
He later stated, however,
that while vice survey reports
favorable to a community are
often released to the press and
public, those disclosing unfa
vorable conditions are usually
submitted to local officials, in
confidence. He said such un
favorable reports would be
made public only "as a last
resort" in cases where the of
ficials failed to take action on
their own.
Vice and Graft
Asked if he considered this
the best practice-since, if as
he said, vice and graft went
together it was possible the
officials who received the re
ports in confidence Were in
volved in. graft themselves-
Clarke replied that public of
ficials were assumed to be
honest and sincere in all cases
until proven otherwise.
Some -police chiefs, he as
serted, are honestly not aware
of vice conditions in their own
communities. He explained
this by citing the devious
methods of underworld opera- J
tors. -
On the nation's venereal
disease problem and its in
roads into' the ranks of teen
agers, Clarke reported that a
new infection takes place" at
least once every 11 minutes
and possibly as often as once
ever three minutes. One in ev
ery 200 American teen-agers
will acquire venereal disease
this year, he asserted.
Clarke ' said the Oregon
state board of health has re
ported an increase of 3V
times in the number of teen
agers incurring venereal dis
ease in the past decade. Ille
gitimate, children, , he added,
are also on the rise. , i
Voluntary Service Agency
The ASHA, he said, is a 47-
year-old yoluntary community
service agency dedicated to
social health primarly through
preservation of the family.

work, the ASHA conducts a
widespread . education pro
gram through pamphlets and
training teachers in under
standing and teaching the im-

Bartholomew to Talk

Bartholomew visited all
three cities on a recent trip
to Europe.
The address will be his fifth
before the club. In 1943, he
spoke on the New Guinea
campaigns of Gen. Douglas
MacArthur; in 1946, he gave
an eyewitness account of the
Bikini A-bomb tests; in 1949,
he discussed the Communist
takeover of mainland China;
and in 1951 he spoke on the
Korean War and subsequent
truce negotiations.

of bees clouded the road.
Maloney stopped his pickup
suddenly as he and his passen
ger swatted at the insects.
Mrs. Jordan had her three
children along," and as she
tried to bat buzzing bees out
of the car, the two vehicles
collided. -"
Her car was slightly dam
aged. All six occupants of
both vehicles suffered stings
-the only, injuries.
Maloney got the final sting,
however, when he was cited
by police for failure to have
a driver's license in his possession.
