Francisco when they beat the
Giants, 6-1, Tuesday night
and knocked them out of first
place by one. percentage
point. .
The Braves, apparently
over a near-disastrous mid
July slump, have won six of
their last seven while Spahn
has won four in a row and
lo for the season. He held
the Giants to three singles
and shut 'them out until the
ninth.

Yakima and Wenatchee, the
two teams who have been
battling for top spot in the
Northwest league, found them
selves deadlocked for the spot
today with the rest of the
pack breathing down their
necks.
Eugene bopped Wenatchee
9-0 and 5-4 in Tuesday night's
play and Salem topped Yaki
ma 12-5. The results left
Yakima and Wenatchee with
identical, 19-16 marks. Tri-
City nipped Lewiston 5-4 in
the other game. - '
Bob Bolin held Wenatchee
to two hits in the opener and
Eugene exploded for eight
runs in the fifth to wrap that
one up. For Bolin it was his
14th win of the year.
The Emeralds got the win
ning run in the seventh in
ning of the nightcap when
John Orsino's single through

Title Fight Guarantees

The new major domo of
boxing already has started the
wheels turning for a return
heavyweight c h a m pionship
bout. .
Irving Kahn says be has re
ceived what he terms two
"huge guarantees" for the
September 22 bout between
Champion Ingemar Johansson
and Floyd Patterson. Kahn
has replaced Bill Rosensohn
who promoted the June fight
in which Johansson took the
title from Patterson. Kahn is
now board chairman of Rosen
sohn Enterprises as well as
head of Teleprompter Corpor
ation. Kahn said one guarantee is
a gross of more than $600,000
at the gate. He added that a
deal will be made as soon as
those involved deposit the
guarantee in a bank. ,
A national magazine (Sports
Illustrated) quotes Bill Rosen
sohn as saying as he stepped
down as boxing promoter
against his will.
Rosensohn, in a copyright
first person story, tells how
he was forced to give up a
share of his profits from the
June title fight between In
gemar Johansson and xloyd
Patterson. The reason, said
Rosensohn, was to keep Cus

Oversubscribed
In Applications
Portland Processing of
applications for the unit deer
hunts received by the July 27
deadline reveal that ten areas
are oversubscribed the Oregon
game commission said.
These units include Clatsop,
Deschutes, Green Springs,
Grizzly, Metolius, Ochoco,
Paulina, Trask, Wasco and
Wilson. A public drawing for
permits for these ten areas
will be held at 10 a.m. Aug.
11.
Hunters are urged by the
game commission not to sub
mit any more applications for
the above ten areas.
Immediately following the
drawing those persons not
successful in obtaining per
mits of their first choice unit
will be placed in the second
or third choice area if pos
sible. This process will prob
ably fill a few additional units
including the Silver Lake unit
which lacked a few applicants
by the July 27 deadline.

applications received after
that date. Applications re
ceived ,by the commission
after July 27 are being filed

Portland Track
Put Up for Sale
Portland-fUPD-The Portland
Meadows race track is report
ed to be up for sale with an
asking price of 52,500,000 dol
lars or more. "Tie prime stock
holder in the Portland Turf
association is David Funk of
Phoenix, Ariz. He says that
the track is up for sale to any
one who will meet that price.
He adds that a couple of peo
ple have ben negotiating but
that so far he's not interested
in any of the off ers they have
made.

Stengel Offers
All-Star Plan

the New York Yankees has of
fered a plan if baseball in

Stengel, who led the Ameri
can leaguers to a 5-3 win over
the national circuit Monday
at Los Angeles, suggests the
two games be held on consecu
tive days. This year they were
split between July 7 at Pitts
burgh and yesterday's game.
Stengel said his plan would
provide for two games, a day
of rest and then the pennant
races could be resumed.
As to those pennant races,
Stengel has this to say
"Folks insist the Chicago
White Sox can't win because
they can't hit. But, they seem
to be winning" The' front run
ning White Sox have a three-gar-e
bulge over Cleveland.

It's for a good cause and we
would vote for it again." The

Shriners hospital for crippled
children here Tuesday and
came away with a renewed
determination to play their
hardest.
The game is for the bene
fit of the Shriners' hospital,
and the visit Tuesday gave
State and Metropolitan team
players a first-hand look at
the work of the hospital and
how the game's proceeds are
spent.
The gridders were a popu
lar bunch as they moved from
bed to bed, tcssing footballs
to the out-stretched hands of
patients and autographing
leg and arm casts. The af
fectionate hugs of bright
eyed little girls prompted
one State linesman to ob
serve:
"Boy, this is really some
t ing. It sure makes a differ
ence when you see this. I just
never, had any idea. Those
poor little guys."
Youngsters Thrilled
But those "poor little
guys" were wasting no sym
pathy on themselves. Instead,
they were obviously thrilled
at the visit of the husky
young men, and smiled their
best to make the visitors feel
at home. ,
The visit to the hospital at
NE 82nd and Sandy came
after brisk morning drills for
both teams. The Staters
worked out at Woodrow Wil
son High and the Metros at
Lewis and Clark college.
After the visit to the hos
pital, Coaches Ton DeSyl via

tackles and the blocks would
be sharper today.

Outfielder Jackie Jensen
and the Boston Red, Sox have
reached an agreement.
Jensen, the American
league's most valuable player
last season, had a 10-minute
chat yesterday with General
Manager Bucky Harris. When
it was over Jensen said he
would "probably t ick around
the rest of this season." There
have been reports that Jensen,
who .'earns $39,000 with the
Red Sox, wanted to retire and
spend more time with his wife
and children.
Jensen said his reasons are
personal and had nothing to
do with money.
