Mrrni B Ernviiin has
chick-nsd out.
Erntin Y. W won't
b able to Ut with our-
t tlves afterwards.
Myrna B My sister and I
are women in our 50's with
families and loads of respon
sibility. In recent years one
of our biggest headaches has
been our mother who is in her
80's.
Mother has lived with me
and with my sister, Ernestine.
But wherever Mother is Jiving
she seems to want to be at the
other place. At last she said
she wanted to go to a home
for the aged.
After a year of hard work
we found what we think is a
good place for her. Now Moth
ers says she doesn't want to
go. I am fed up and I feel
we should show a little spunk
and make her go. But now
Ernestine has chickened out.
Ernestine Y. We have put
up with Mom so I feel we
should do it a little longer.
We would never be able to
forgive ourselves if we made
her miserable and deserted
her in her last years. I don't
think we would be able to live
with ouselves.
Anyway, I don't see how
we can possibly force Mom to
do anything. We can't drag
her out of the house against
her will. What is she absolute
ly refuses to go? She is stay
ing with me just now and I
have promised her I won't let
anyone harm her.
I am just about worn out
from this thing and I'm ready
to put up with it and keep
quiet. It's better than fighting
Mom.
Tha ..Council:.. Under the
guise of being good to their
mother, both these women
have been unkind to her for
many years.
" An elderly person who com
plains constantly wherever
she is needs someone to make
a few decisions for her and
stick to them kindly but firm
ly. The mother in this case is
really complaining about the
steady waning of her strength
and ability. She is dissatisfied
with herself and refuses to ac
cept life as it comes. When
she can play her daughters
against each other and get
them to submit to her every
whim she derives a false and
temporary satisfaction. She
Imagines herself in her old
position of power.
Myrna and Ernestine have
probably often wished they
could be free of this tyranny
and feel guilty about this de
sire. Their mother can play on
this guilt when she wants to
extend her power one step
further.
For their own. sakes and
for their mother's sake these
women should come to a clear
cut decision about the best
place for their mother. It will
not be necessary to "drag her"
anywhere by force if they are
patient and use common sense,
tact and moral authority. The
elderly woman can be con
vinced that the home for the
aged is the best place for her
and she can be reassured that
her daughters are not desert
ing her. They can prove this
by frequent visits and remem
brances of all sorts. They
should accept her complaints
in stride once they have con
vinced themselves that she
is getting good care.
We do not necessarily rec
ommend the home for the aged
as the best place for the elder
ly woman. We recommend
simply that the sisters come
to their own decision and then
stand firmly on it.
